Senator Elizabeth Warren sharply escalated her criticism of Nvidia Corp (NVDA) Chief Executive Jensen Huang on Monday, demanding he appear before Congress to answer questions about the company’s technology surfacing in Russian military hardware.<\/p>\n
The Massachusetts Democrat took to X to challenge Huang directly, framing his absence from congressional hearings as a matter of priorities. “If Jensen Huang has time to attend a $1 million-a-head dinner at Mar-a-Lago and fly across the world to meet with President Xi Jinping, he can find time to testify in front of Congress about reports that NVIDIA technology is powering Russia’s war machine,” she wrote.<\/p>\n
Her remarks came in response to a New York Times investigation revealing that Ukrainian forces had recovered Nvidia Jetson Orin computers from the wreckage of Russian drones used in attacks near Zaporizhzhia. The compact, consumer-grade modules are marketed for civilian uses such as robotics, machine vision, and autonomous systems development.<\/p>\n
Ukrainian defense officials told the paper that the embedded computers may have given the drones the ability to identify targets without a human operator making the final strike decision. One such drone reportedly killed three people in Zaporizhzhia on July 6, according to Ukrainian air defense authorities. Ukraine’s defense intelligence agency separately said an Nvidia Jetson computer was found aboard a Russian S-71M Monochrome missile that had been tested in strikes against the country.<\/p>\n
The discoveries have intensified scrutiny of how Western-made technology reaches Russian forces despite sweeping export controls imposed after the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. While Nvidia does not sell directly to Russia, the company acknowledged that its products circulate through resale channels beyond its control.<\/p>\n
In an emailed statement, Nvidia described the Jetson systems as “consumer-grade products sold to students, developers and start-ups for a wide range of beneficial applications.” The company said the Jetson line was not sold in Russia and was not designed for military use. A spokesperson added, “Although we cannot track products after they are sold, if we determine that any customer is violating U.S. export controls, we will take appropriate action.”<\/p>\n
This is not the first time Warren has pressed Huang to testify. In June, she invited him to appear before the Senate Banking Committee to discuss Nvidia’s China operations and U.S. export control compliance. He declined, saying he was “unable to attend,” and instead invited Warren and other committee members to visit Nvidia’s headquarters in California.<\/p>\n
The exchange underscores growing bipartisan concern in Washington over the proliferation of advanced computing components into adversarial military supply chains. While Nvidia’s data center GPUs have become the backbone of the global AI boom, the appearance of its lower-cost embedded systems in Russian weapons has drawn attention to the company’s sprawling downstream distribution network.<\/p>\n
Analysts note that the Jetson Orin is widely available through legitimate distributors, educational programs, and online marketplaces, making end-use verification difficult for any manufacturer. The challenge is not unique to Nvidia, but the company’s position as the world’s most valuable semiconductor firm has made it a focal point for lawmakers seeking accountability.<\/p>\n
Warren’s invocation of Huang’s reported dinner at Mar-a-Lago and his meetings with Chinese leadership reflects a broader critique that technology executives have disproportionate access to political power while evading public oversight. Her comments suggest the issue may gain traction as Congress weighs additional export control legislation.<\/p>\n
Nvidia shares have remained resilient through the controversy, with the company ranking in the 99th percentile for growth metrics according to Benzinga Edge Rankings, while maintaining positive short-, medium-, and long-term price trend ratings.
