{"id":208113,"date":"2026-08-31T01:58:12","date_gmt":"2026-08-31T01:58:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/people\/208113\/"},"modified":"2026-08-31T01:58:12","modified_gmt":"2026-08-31T01:58:12","slug":"gubernatorial-candidate-steve-hilton-blasts-california-new-tire-rules-newsom-hits-back","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/people\/208113\/","title":{"rendered":"Gubernatorial Candidate Steve Hilton Blasts California New Tire Rules; Newsom Hits Back"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"nnpa-byline\">By Carla Thomas<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0 0 1em 0;\">As plans for the redevelopment of the Oakland Coliseum move forward, a key question is emerging alongside the vision for new buildings, entertainment, and economic activity: Who will have the opportunity to build it?\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0 0 1em 0;\">For the African American Sports &amp; Entertainment Group (AASEG) and its financial partner Loop Capital, the answer could include a much larger role for Oakland\u2019s small, minority-, and women-owned businesses.\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0 0 1em 0;\">During a recent meeting with AASEG, Loop Capital and local construction and business leaders, participants discussed creating pathways that would allow smaller firms to move beyond traditional subcontracting roles, compete as prime contractors, secure larger portions of project work and ultimately become permanent fixtures within the new development.\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0 0 1em 0;\">Unlike many major developments where contracting discussions begin after large construction packages have already been established, the Coliseum conversation is engaging the community early in the process.\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0 0 1em 0;\">\u201cWe have an opportunity to start building capacity now, not after the contracts hit the street,\u201d said Len Turner of the Construction Resource Center. \u201cIf we know what the opportunities are going to be, we can identify businesses, understand where their gaps are and start preparing them to successfully compete and perform.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.postnewsgroup.com\/press-room-high-school-students-nationwide-now-applying-for-popular-disney-dreamers-academy-mentorship-program\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/people\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/disney-dreamers-academy-featured-web-300x156.jpg\"  alt=\"PRESS ROOM: High School Students Nationwide Now Applying for Popular Disney Dreamers Academy Mentorship Program \u00a0\u00a0\"\/><\/a>Trending<a class=\"monsterinsights-inline-popular-posts-title\" href=\"https:\/\/www.postnewsgroup.com\/press-room-high-school-students-nationwide-now-applying-for-popular-disney-dreamers-academy-mentorship-program\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">PRESS ROOM: High School Students Nationwide Now Applying for Popular Disney Dreamers Academy Mentorship Program \u00a0\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0 0 1em 0;\">Preparing companies to compete for larger contracts could include assistance with estimating, bonding, financing, workforce development, project management and contract administration.\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0 0 1em 0;\">For some firms, the goal could be moving from a $500,000 subcontract to a multimillion-dollar prime contract. For others, success could mean transitioning from providing construction services to operating restaurants, retail businesses, or other enterprises within the completed Coliseum development.\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0 0 1em 0;\">Turner said the long-term measure of inclusion should extend beyond the number of businesses that receive contracts.\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0 0 1em 0;\">\u201cThe real measure of success will be whether these businesses are stronger and more capable when this project is finished than when they started,\u201d Turner said.\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0 0 1em 0;\">That philosophy reflects a broader effort to address systemic disparities in public and private contracting. Oakland\u2019s small and minority-owned businesses have historically faced barriers to capital access, bonding, and limited access to larger contracts.\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0 0 1em 0;\">Mario Wagner of the National Association of Minority Contractors Northern California Chapter\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0 0 1em 0;\">said the Coliseum redevelopment offers an opportunity to change that trajectory.\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0 0 1em 0;\">Turner\u00a0and Wagner are also members of a coalition of businesses led by Oakland African American Chamber of Commerce CEO Cathy Adams, which is soon presenting plans to the City of Oakland that could also\u00a0help lift minority and women-owned firms.\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0 0 1em 0;\">\u201cNAMC was born in Oakland fighting for minority contractors to have access,\u201d Wagner said. \u201cThis cannot just be about checking a box.
