“A sensible person would now summon the Russian ambassador and tell him: we haven’t supplied the Taurus missile yet, but if this hybrid threat to Germany continues, we will do everything to ensure that Ukraine receives the weapons necessary for large-scale defense against Russia,” Kubicki emphasizes.<\/p>\n
Germany’s Free Democratic Party has long been one of the most active advocates for providing Ukraine with long-range weapons. However, following the results of the most recent parliamentary elections, this political party failed to win seats in the Bundestag.<\/p>\n
Taurus missiles for Ukraine<\/p>\n
While in the opposition, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz repeatedly stated his intention to transfer Taurus cruise missiles to Ukraine for strikes against Russian territory.<\/p>\n
After coming to power, Merz did not change his position. Specifically, in July of last year, the head of the German government did not rule out transferring these weapons to Ukraine.<\/a><\/p>\n At the same time, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius stated during a visit to Kyiv last year that Berlin was not considering transferring these missiles to Ukraine.<\/a><\/p>\n Late last year, members of the German parliament called on Merz to transfer Taurus long-range missiles to Ukraine, arguing that the Chancellor should uphold the principles he had rightly advocated while in the opposition.<\/p>\n
