Asked directly whether he trusts Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, Lutnick offered an unequivocal endorsement during an interview on Tuesday. “We trust Anthropic. They’ve done what we asked. They’re back on the right side. So the answer is: Yes,” he said.<\/p>\n
The statement represents a striking reversal for a company that until recently was locked in litigation with the federal government and had seen its most advanced models subjected to sweeping export controls. It also arrives at a pivotal moment as Anthropic lays the groundwork for a potential initial public offering that market observers believe could rival SpaceX’s record-setting debut.<\/p>\n
The thaw was on full display Wednesday at the G20 Innovation Ministerial in North Carolina, where Lutnick gave Anthropic co-founder Tom Brown a prominent platform before an audience of international ministers. “Really excited for our conversation, so I’d like to introduce you all to Tom Brown, one of the founders of Anthropic,” Lutnick said, adding, “I don’t think they know you so well. Anthropic, of course, is famous, but a little story helps.”<\/p>\n

The rapprochement follows a period of intense friction that began earlier this year. The conflict centered on Anthropic’s refusal to allow the U.S. government to use its Claude models for domestic surveillance or autonomous weapons, a stance that brought the company into direct conflict with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and led the Pentagon to block Anthropic from certain military contracts.<\/p>\n
The dispute escalated in June when the Commerce Department temporarily restricted exports of Anthropic’s flagship models over national security concerns. The improving political climate carries significant financial implications. Anthropic filed confidentially for an IPO in June, and backers have told the Financial Times they expect a valuation of $2 trillion or more, though executives have fixed no target. SpaceX set the bar with an $85.7 billion raise in June, and Anthropic reportedly aims to beat that record.<\/p>\n
The stakes of the earlier feud were laid bare in court filings. Chief Financial Officer Krishna Rao said the Pentagon’s supply-chain label could cut 2026 revenue by multiple billions of dollars, while public sector head Thiyagu Ramasamy projected public sector revenue above $500 million for the year and put more than $150 million of recurring revenue at immediate risk.<\/p>\n
With Anthropic’s revenue run rate reaching $65 billion in August, government work represents well under 1% of the total. The real damage, analysts said, was reputational.<\/p>\n
