{"id":212949,"date":"2026-09-03T08:29:15","date_gmt":"2026-09-03T08:29:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/people\/212949\/"},"modified":"2026-09-03T08:29:15","modified_gmt":"2026-09-03T08:29:15","slug":"us-issues-us1-coin-featuring-trump-despite-law-barring-living-presidents-on-currency","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/people\/212949\/","title":{"rendered":"US issues US$1 coin featuring Trump despite law barring living presidents on currency"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>WASHINGTON, Sept 3 \u2014 The US Treasury yesterday issued US$1 (RM4.04) coins featuring the face of President Donald Trump, the latest move in an unprecedented campaign by the Republican billionaire to put his personal stamp on national institutions.<\/p>\n<p>The coins were minted to mark the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States celebrated this year.<\/p>\n<p>A roll of 25 US$1 coins was available for sale for US$61 \u2014 a mark-up of 144 per cent \u2014 with a 100-coin bag available for US$154.50.<\/p>\n<p>When the Treasury announced the plan it was unclear if the coins would have monetary value or would be purely commemorative, but on Wednesday the US Mint said the coins were \u201calso in circulation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The move to put Trump\u2019s countenance on a coin with monetary value runs counter to federal law that says no living president may appear on US currency.<\/p>\n<p>Trump has aggressively defied precedent and legal challenges in his push to remake US institutions in his second term, putting his name on the Kennedy Center for the Arts and demolishing the East Wing of the White House to make room for a new ballroom, among other moves.<\/p>\n<p>The new coin features Trump\u2019s face on one side, with the words \u201cLiberty\u201d and \u201cIn God We Trust.\u201d It also features the dates 1776-2026, marking 250 years of US independence.<\/p>\n<p>The other side of the coin features a version of the US presidential seal, depicting an eagle clutching arrows and an olive branch while covered by a shield that says \u201c250.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This is just the latest in Trump\u2019s campaign to put his face and name on US currency.<\/p>\n<p>In May, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said his department was pursuing a plan to issue a new US$250 bill with Trump\u2019s face on it.<\/p>\n<p>He conceded that the move would require Congress to change the law barring living persons from appearing on currency.<\/p>\n<p>The US Treasury did not immediately respond to a request for comment on whether the new US$1 coin violates that law.<\/p>\n<p>In March, the Treasury announced that US paper money would soon bear Trump\u2019s signature \u2014 another first for a sitting US president. \u2014 AFP<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"WASHINGTON, Sept 3 \u2014 The US Treasury yesterday issued US$1 (RM4.04) coins featuring the face of President Donald&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":212950,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":"","_share_on_mastodon":"0"},"categories":[2],"tags":[12,95227,10,11,2310,3580,94907,35933],"class_list":["post-212949","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-donald-trump","tag-donald-trump","tag-liberty-coin","tag-potus","tag-president-of-the-united-states","tag-presidential-seal","tag-scott-bessent","tag-us-mint","tag-us-treasury"],"share_on_mastodon":{"url":"https:\/\/pubeurope.com\/@people\/117206172699524766","error":""},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/people\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/212949","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/people\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/people\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/people\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/people\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=212949"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/people\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/212949\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/people\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/212950"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/people\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=212949"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/people\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=212949"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/people\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=212949"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
