One subpoena demanded Black produce nondisclosure agreements and other documents, while the other compelled him to return for a deposition before the committee.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">Black\u2019s lawsuit argues the subpoenas exceed the committee\u2019s authority by seeking private information unrelated to Epstein or any legitimate legislative purpose. It asks a federal judge to declare the subpoenas invalid and prevent the committee from enforcing them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">\u201cThe Committee is on a fishing expedition that oversteps its authority and completely ignores its responsibility,&#8221; Black\u2019s attorney, Susan Estrich, said in a statement. \u201cThis is no longer about finding the truth about Epstein. It is about trying to destroy Mr. Black.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">Top Oversight lawmakers threaten to hold Black in contempt<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">The top Republican and Democratic lawmakers on the committee both criticized Black&#8217;s lawsuit and said they planned to discuss later Thursday whether they would hold him in contempt of Congress.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">\u201cThis is unacceptable. We&#8217;re very disappointed,\u201d said House Oversight Chair James Comer. \u201cOf all the powerful billionaires and political people we&#8217;ve brought in for interview and depositions, this is the first time anyone&#8217;s filed suit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">Rep. Robert Garcia, the top Democrat on the committee, called the lawsuit \u201claughable\u201d and that Black is \u201ctrying to slow the process down of getting us the information.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">\u201cToday, the process of contempt has to begin,\u201d Garcia said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">Being held in contempt opens up a witness to criminal prosecution. If the House approves a contempt resolution against Black, it would fall to the Justice Department to decide whether to bring charges against him. <\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">Black paid Epstein over $150 million during their yearslong relationship<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">Black is the co-founder and former chief executive of the private equity firm Apollo Global Management. He stepped down in 2021 during the fallout over his ties to Epstein.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">Lawmakers have alleged that Black paid Epstein $180 million during their yearslong relationship. <\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">A 2021 review commissioned by Apollo found that Black paid Epstein $158 million from 2012 to 2017, after Epstein <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-epstein-investigation-records-timeline-545c371ee3dd3142355a26d27829c188\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">pleaded guilty in 2008<\/a> to soliciting prostitution from a minor. The review said the payments were for \u201cbona fide tax, estate planning and other related services.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">Black is among a number of influential figures to appear in the investigation into Epstein and the <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/epstein-investigation-congress-trump-justice-department-files-92d83b2e51088d3b8b75f556ce4135ba\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">web of wealth and influence<\/a> around him. Other figures to have appeared for the investigation include former Democratic President <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/bill-clinton-jeffrey-epstein-deposition-congress-9ea23ac5a5ffd1c7b9511e46308e8b21\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Bill Clinton<\/a>, Commerce Secretary <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/jeffrey-epstein-howard-lutnick-51283ede04b8dd2f6d72be495d6ebb7b\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Howard Lutnick<\/a> and Microsoft co-founder <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/bill-gates-jeffrey-epstein-house-investigation-d8d5c31739bb9452e979018be2fd4f35\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Bill Gates<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">Black is <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/jeffrey-epstein-client-list-sex-trafficking-049c96080a2ca2c12c84ac506437e50b\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">mentioned repeatedly<\/a> in files that the Justice Department has released related to the Epstein investigation. He also appears in a collection of <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/jeffrey-epstein-birthday-book-8b02a708a1269f5f916350f2278c1ac4\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">birthday messages<\/a> sent to Epstein that were released by the House committee last year, including a poem attributed to Black that refers to \u201cBlond, Red or Brunette, spread out geographically.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">Before the June 26 appearance before the committee, Black maintained that he was not aware of Epstein\u2019s \u201cnefarious activity\u201d until 2019 and that he paid Epstein for legitimate purposes, in part due to his \u201cunrivaled network of relationships\u201d with influential figures.<\/p>\n<p>Copyright 2026 The Associated Press.
