Prosecutors on Sept. 3 announced they opened an investigation <\/a>of former Prime Minister Ahmet Davuto\u011flu<\/a>, who also ran the Future Party<\/a>, for allegedly insulting Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdo\u011fan.<\/p>\n In a statement, prosecutors in the capital Ankara said the probe was opened following comments that Davuto\u011flu, 67, shared on social media that were viewed as insulting to the president.<\/p>\n According to media reports, the investigation concerns remarks made by Davuto\u011flu during a visit to the southeastern province of Diyarbak\u0131r in 2022. The video of the remarks was circulating on social media in recent days.<\/p>\n Davuto\u011flu served as T\u00fcrkiye\u2019s foreign minister from 2009-2014 then as prime minister from 2014-2016.<\/p>\n After falling out with the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP), Davuto\u011flu in 2019 established the Future Party.<\/p>\n On July 29, Davuto\u011flu announced that his Future Party would end its political activities, describing the decision as an effort to distance itself from what he called T\u00fcrkiye\u2019s \u201ccorrupted political climate.\u201d<\/p>\n In a statement posted on X, Davuto\u011flu said that the move was \u201cnot a surrender\u201d or a withdrawal from politics, but \u201ca call for everyone to rethink politics.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cWe have decided to withdraw from party politics in order not to become part of the corrupted political climate,\u201d he said, calling the move \u201ca decision to establish moral distance.\u201d<\/p>\n The Future Party is one of three opposition parties that jointly formed the New Path bloc in parliament alongside the SP and the Democracy and Progress Party (DEVA).<\/p>\n
