Bad news: Mayor Zohran Mamdani\u2019s just-released Racial Equity Plan<\/a> is promising to address \u201cdisparities\u201d in racial outcomes based on a dangerously flawed understanding their causes \u2014 and seemingly with a distinctly anti-American solution: racial favoritism.<\/p>\n

Good news: There\u2019s little sign, based on the plan and on his record, he\u2019ll actually deliver on his promises.<\/p>\n

Start with the fact that America was founded on the principle of equal opportunity, not outcomes. Only minds twisted by the fantasy of a socialist utopia would expect outcomes to be the same for everyone, despite pivotal differences between them \u2014 most notably, the effort they put in.<\/p>\n

And would then resort to blatantly unfair, unlawful and wholly ineffective means in supposed pursuit of that equality.<\/p>\n

Remember, the nation\u2019s successful civil rights movement was premised on securing equal rights, not outcomes, for blacks and other racial minorities, and later, women.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Equal opportunity was, is and always should be the ideal.<\/p>\n

The Mamdani plan\u2019s main mistake is that it assumes racial disparities are chiefly the result of \u201chistorical harm\u201d \u2014 never mind that slavery ended 160 years and the civil-rights reforms rolled back most official racist policies more than 60 years ago.<\/p>\n

Indeed, the plan sees \u201csystemic racism\u201d sewn into the fabric of the city\u2019s history, governance and policies.<\/p>\n

And then hints of addressing disparities by giving minorities an edge, in one form or another.<\/p>\n

Fortunately, except in a few places, the report offers little meat on the bones for achieving that. It largely calls for studies, recommendations, data, etc. \u2014 as opposed to actual, immediate, concrete changes. <\/p>\n

Unfortunately, where there is meat, it\u2019s rancid. When it comes to \u201cracial equity\u201d goals set by the city\u2019s Administration for Children\u2019s Services, for example, Naomi Schaefer Riley<\/a> fumes that \u201creducing racial inequity trumps reducing abuse and neglect\u201d of kids \u201cevery time.\u201d<\/p>\n

ACS\u2019s emphasis on race-based approaches \u201cwill only put more children, of all races, in grave danger.\u201d<\/p>\n

The\u00a0plan also aims to expand race-based contracting, which is unconstitutional and undermines fair, unbiased competitive bidding. The government shouldn\u2019t combat \u201cracial disparities\u201d by discriminating in favor supposedly \u201charmed\u201d racial groups.<\/p>\n

Thank goodness Mamdani is generally more interested in symbols than results, as is clear from his promises for government-run grocery stores, free buses, universal child care and more.<\/p>\n

Equity hustlers like him, who traffic in the fiction of equal outcomes, are mainly looking to profit politically from the resentments their false claims and hollow promises stoke.<\/p>\n
