{"id":21774,"date":"2026-04-11T16:38:20","date_gmt":"2026-04-11T16:38:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/people\/21774\/"},"modified":"2026-04-11T16:38:20","modified_gmt":"2026-04-11T16:38:20","slug":"billionaire-chipmaker-ceo-lisa-su-holds-meetings-on-weekends-and-sends-feedback-after-midnight","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/people\/21774\/","title":{"rendered":"Billionaire chipmaker CEO Lisa Su holds meetings on weekends and sends feedback after midnight"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As businesses around the world embrace a <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2026\/03\/03\/kickstarter-ceo-pros-cons-four-day-work-week-sometimes-backfires\/\" href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2026\/03\/03\/kickstarter-ceo-pros-cons-four-day-work-week-sometimes-backfires\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">four-day week<\/a> and \u201cthe right to disconnect\u201d, Lisa Su, the CEO of chipmaker <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/advanced-micro-devices\/\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/advanced-micro-devices\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Advanced Micro Devices<\/a> (AMD), goes against the grain and asks some staff to show up on Saturdays.<\/p>\n<p>When the 56-year-old took AMD\u2019s reins in 2014, it was far from the $322 billion company it is today. At the time, its stock was trading around $3 per share and, according to <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/time.com\/7200909\/ceo-of-the-year-2024-lisa-su\/\" href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/7200909\/ceo-of-the-year-2024-lisa-su\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Time<\/a>, the indebted firm had just resorted to cutting about 25% of its staff and selling its Austin office.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But under Su\u2019s helm, the company has become one of the world\u2019s top chipmakers, competing with the likes of <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/intel\/\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/intel\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Intel<\/a> and <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/nvidia\/\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/nvidia\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Nvidia<\/a>. Its stock has surged to around $200 per share, and her net worth has ballooned along with it\u2014the rise pushed Su into <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/phoebeliu\/2024\/04\/02\/the-billionaires-getting-rich-from-ai-2024\/\" href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/phoebeliu\/2024\/04\/02\/the-billionaires-getting-rich-from-ai-2024\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Forbes\u2019 billionaire list<\/a> for the first time in 2024.<\/p>\n<p>That turnaround didn\u2019t come without sacrifice. And Su makes no secret of that.<\/p>\n<p>As confirmed to Fortune, the CEO even holds weekend meetings with her senior team.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople are really motivated by ambitious goals,\u201d the Fortune 500 boss previously told Time. \u201cThe previous strategy of, hey, let\u2019s just do a little bit better here and there\u2014that\u2019s actually less motivational.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t believe leaders are born. I believe leaders are trained,\u201d she added, before reportingly heading into a strategy meeting and urging her executives \u201cto move faster and delegate more.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The profile also suggested Su calls managers in the morning to discuss memos she sent them after midnight, however, an AMD spokesperson told Fortune \u201cthe specific anecdote was related to a pre-read that was distributed to her very late the evening prior for an early morning meeting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLisa provided feedback on which specific parts of the lengthy slide presentation the team should focus on in order to have a productive discussion,\u201d the spokesperson added.<\/p>\n<p>After-hours work: encouraged by some CEOs, despised by Gen Z and millennials<\/p>\n<p>Of course, Su is not the only CEO who contacts staff in the evenings or weekends.<\/p>\n<p>Daksh Gupta, the 23-year-old at the helm of AI software startup Greptile has made it crystal clear that work-life balance is a myth at his company\u2014so clear, in fact, that he\u2019s spelled it out in an online job description.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRecently I started telling candidates right in the first interview that Greptile offers no work-life-balance, typical workdays start at 9 a.m. and end at 11 p.m., often later, and we work Saturdays, sometimes also Sundays,\u201d Gupta wrote on <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/twitter\/\" href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/twitter\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">X<\/a>. \u201cI emphasize the environment is high <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/well\/article\/how-to-lower-cortisol\/\" href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/well\/article\/how-to-lower-cortisol\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">stress<\/a>, and there is no tolerance for poor work.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe work extremely long hours because we\u2019re trying to outwork our competition,\u201d he told <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/well\/article\/ceo-tech-80-hour-workweek-backlash\/?utm_source=search&amp;utm_medium=suggested_search&amp;utm_campaign=search_link_clicks\" href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/well\/article\/ceo-tech-80-hour-workweek-backlash\/?utm_source=search&amp;utm_medium=suggested_search&amp;utm_campaign=search_link_clicks\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Fortune<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>And then there\u2019s <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/tesla\/\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/tesla\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Tesla<\/a> CEO Elon Musk, who is perhaps the loudest proponent of <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2023\/06\/02\/tesla-ceo-elon-musk-shanghai-gigafactory-midnight-china-remote-work-laptop-class\/\" href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2023\/06\/02\/tesla-ceo-elon-musk-shanghai-gigafactory-midnight-china-remote-work-laptop-class\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">burning the midnight oil<\/a>. After taking over <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/twitter\/\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/twitter\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Twitter<\/a>, now X, he <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2022\/11\/16\/elon-musk-email-twitter-extremely-hardcore-long-hours-high-intensity\/\" href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2022\/11\/16\/elon-musk-email-twitter-extremely-hardcore-long-hours-high-intensity\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">emailed his new employees (in the middle of the night, no less) <\/a>demanding they work \u201clong hours at high intensity.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Soon after, he praised Shanghai employees for meeting him near midnight while blasting the U.S. \u201claptop class\u201d for working from home. Of course, he\u2019s no stranger himself to sleeping overnight at the <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2018\/04\/03\/elon-musk-sleeping-tesla-factory\/\" href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2018\/04\/03\/elon-musk-sleeping-tesla-factory\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Tesla factory<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>However, it\u2019s well known that for young workers today, having a life outside of work is just as important (if not more so) as building a career.<\/p>\n<p>Research has consistently shown that this generation will <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2023\/07\/06\/millennial-gen-z-employees-are-rejecting-assignments-turning-down-offers-and-seeking-purpose-they-expect-of-employers-according-to-deloittes-latest-survey\/?utm_source=search&amp;utm_medium=suggested_search&amp;utm_campaign=search_link_clicks\" href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2023\/07\/06\/millennial-gen-z-employees-are-rejecting-assignments-turning-down-offers-and-seeking-purpose-they-expect-of-employers-according-to-deloittes-latest-survey\/?utm_source=search&amp;utm_medium=suggested_search&amp;utm_campaign=search_link_clicks\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">turn down offers <\/a>from employers who don\u2019t align with their values and <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2023\/04\/25\/gen-z-millennials-new-9-to-5-starts-6-pm-walking-out-employers-accommodate-their-schedule\/?utm_source=search&amp;utm_medium=advanced_search&amp;utm_campaign=search_link_clicks\" href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2023\/04\/25\/gen-z-millennials-new-9-to-5-starts-6-pm-walking-out-employers-accommodate-their-schedule\/?utm_source=search&amp;utm_medium=advanced_search&amp;utm_campaign=search_link_clicks\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">walk out of jobs<\/a> that don\u2019t grant them the flexibility they desire.
