Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has expressed hope for a breakthrough in the stalled peace talks with Russia, saying that US envoys have resumed the negotiation process. <\/p>\n
His remarks came after he met with US special envoys Steve Witkoff and President Donald Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner, in Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv, on Sunday. One day before, the US officials visited Moscow, where they held talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin. <\/p>\n
This is the first time the two have visited Kyiv since Russia’s invasion. They were greeted by Zelenskyy in front of St. Sophia Cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage site. <\/p>\n
The meeting was first attended by Zelenskyy and the two US envoys. Security officials from Britain, Germany and France joined later.<\/p>\n
During the meeting, Zelenskyy stressed that he hopes the war will end justly and that there will be no possibility of more aggression against Ukraine.<\/p>\n
Peace talks with Russia have been stalled partly due to the Iran situation. But, during a news conference after the meeting, Zelensky signaled hope for significant progress, saying that Witkoff and Kushner have resumed the negotiating process.<\/p>\n
Zelenskyy also said that they discussed boosting the country’s air defense system, which is a key challenge, as well as support for the energy sector in case the fighting continues through the winter.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Witkoff, who was also present at the news conference, said, “It’s going to take both sides to make some compromises and narrow the issues between them.” <\/p>\n
