Following the 1860 Battle of Tetouan, the Treaty of Wad Ras forced Morocco to concede the expansion of Ceuta and Melilla as a vital buffer against North African instability. Compromising that line meant risking the continent \u2014 a strategic imperative Sanchez utterly discarded. When over 72,000 migrants overwhelmed the Ceuta perimeter in late July 2026, federal lines crumbled instantly, leaving Madrid to blame nebulous \u201cIsraeli-Russian disinformation.\u201d This chaos validates the warning Orriols has long issued: supranational softness invites asymmetric exploitation of Western borders.<\/p>\n

Orriols, the mayor of Catalonia\u2019s Ripoll and leader of Alianca Catalana, is no Beijing-curious populist. She recognizes what Madrid ignores: true border security requires sovereign authority, justifying her push for a Unilateral Declaration of Independence. Make no mistake: geography dictates that Catalonia is the pivot point for this regional realignment. The territory sits astride the vital Mediterranean shipping lanes and logistics tail feeding American forces. While an Iran-trading, China<\/a>-courting Madrid can throttle that pipeline at will, a pro-Western, pro-Israel leadership in Barcelona can secure it. Sanchez wants the benefits of NATO protection while deepening commercial subservience to Beijing. Sending another polite, toothless communique to Moncloa is a fool\u2019s errand. Instead, Washington must openly engage Orriols within her independence framework, breaking Madrid\u2019s monopoly on U.S. relations and imposing a real cost on Sanchez\u2019s strategic betrayal.<\/p>\n

OPINION: IS SPAIN A NATO ALLY OR A STATE SPONSOR OF TERRORISM?<\/a><\/p>\n

To counter Madrid\u2019s perfidy, Washington must deploy an aggressive, three-track strategy. First, if Orriols is elected as regional president, the National Security Council should establish a Barcelona Security Liaison focused on Maghreb radicalization and port domain awareness, bypassing Madrid entirely; policymakers must invite Orriols to closed interagency sessions, just as Washington received Baltic envoys during Soviet occupation. Second, the State Department<\/a> should accord Alianca Catalana informal representational status \u2014 granting consular access and congressional briefings \u2014 modeled directly on the Somaliland precedent. Third, the Pentagon must condition all Rota Naval Base modernization funding on two ironclad benchmarks: an absolute ban on dual-use flows to Iran, and an immediate unwind of Chinese hardware from Spanish 5G and judicial infrastructure. To cement this alignment, Washington should consider establishing a joint U.S.-Israeli-Catalan maritime counterterrorism cell in Barcelona.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Supporting Orriols within her pro-independence agenda is not a matter of romantic nationalism. It is a calculated strategy to punish a prime minister who treats NATO interests as optional and Chinese ambitions as personal. Madrid chose the breach; Barcelona offers the counterweight. Washington can no longer afford to ignore it.<\/p>\n
