House Speaker Mike Johnson<\/a> (R-La.) is responding to jokes from President Donald Trump<\/a> that the president has effectively taken over his job.<\/p>\n

In a new interview<\/a> with NOTUS, Johnson said that he has the hardest job \u201cin the world,\u201d navigating a small majority over Democrats in the lower chamber and the backlash that comes with it. <\/p>\n

That includes GOP colleagues who criticize him, storm out of rooms, slam doors and block the key priority bills that he and the president want passed. <\/p>\n

Johnson, however, told the outlet that he doesn\u2019t take it personally.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t get my feelings hurt. I never do,\u201d Johnson said in comments released Monday. \u201cWith leadership comes attacks and, you know, defamatory remarks and all. That\u2019s just part of the job. You\u2019re going to be criticized no matter what you do.\u201d<\/p>\n

Citing a Bible verse and the practice of \u201cthe ministry of reconciliation,\u201d he added: \u201cI don\u2019t do this job for the praise of men. I do it because it\u2019s a responsibility.\u201d<\/p>\n

Johnson also weighed in on the occasional pushback he receives from Trump, who has claimed that he has two jobs: being president and being speaker. The president previously appeared to reference his role in rallying the Republican caucus to align on legislative strategy.<\/p>\n

\u201cSome on his staff have said, \u2018No, it\u2019s really like you\u2019re co-president,\u2019\u201d Johnson said to NOTUS of some in the White House. \u201cBecause the president and I speak all the time.\u201d<\/p>\n

But Johnson is now facing his biggest challenge leading the House come November: the midterm elections<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The GOP leader has insisted that Republicans will keep control of Congress \u2014 despite early polls<\/a> showing Democrats hold the advantage and the historical trend of the party in power losing seats.<\/p>\n

With his political future potentially tied to the result, the speaker told NOTUS that he hasn\u2019t pictured the GOP losing. He has also dismissed the idea he would need to run for minority leader.<\/p>\n
