European Council President Ant\u00f3nio Costa said Europe and the U.S. \u201cmust act as allies\u201d \u2014 and urged the Republican leader to show \u201crespect.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWe respect the choice of Americans, and they need to respect the democratic choices of our citizens,\u201d he added during a press conference in Ireland. \u201cWhen all the leaders elect me President of the European Council, President Trump must respect this. As we respect that American citizens elected him President of the United States. It is like this, that allies behave with each other.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
Asked by POLITICO to respond to Trump\u2019s withering assessment, the European Commission\u2019s\u00a0Chief Spokesperson Paula Pinho mounted a\u00a0spirited defense of\u00a0Europe\u2019s leaders.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are very pleased and grateful to have excellent leaders, starting with the leader in this\u00a0house, president of the European Commission von der\u00a0Leyen, who we are really proud of, who can lead us in the many challenges that the world is facing,\u201d Pinho said.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
Pinho also lauded the \u201cmany other leaders at the head of the 27 member states that are part of this European project, of this peace project, who are leading the\u00a0EU with\u00a0all the challenges that it is facing,\u00a0from trade to war\u00a0in our neighborhood.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
She added,\u00a0\u201cSo let me use the opportunity to\u00a0reiterate what is the\u00a0sense of many\u00a0of the millions of citizens in the\u00a0EU: We are proud of our leaders.\u201d<\/p>\n
