The Labour leader pointed fingers at two of the world\u2019s most powerful figures over an issue hitting families where it hurts most.<\/p>\n<p>Keir Starmer slams Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">British Prime Minister Keir Starmer drew parallels between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin over rising energy costs. Starmer expressed frustration during an interview with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.itv.com\/news\/2026-04-09\/starmer-israel-is-wrong-for-striking-lebanon-amid-iran-ceasefire\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:ITV News\u2019;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" data-yga=\"{&quot;yLinkElement&quot;:&quot;context_link&quot;,&quot;yModuleName&quot;:&quot;content-canvas&quot;,&quot;yLinkText&quot;:&quot;ITV News\u2019&quot;}\" class=\"link \">ITV News\u2019<\/a> Talking Politics podcast on Thursday. He made the comments while visiting the Middle East amid a fragile two-week ceasefire in the U.S.-Israeli war with Iran. The conflict has caused oil prices to soar following the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cI\u2019m fed up with the fact that families across the country see their bills go up and down on energy businesses\u2019 bills go up and down on energy because of the actions of Putin or Trump across the world,\u201d Starmer said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The British Prime Minister referenced Putin\u2019s 2022 invasion of Ukraine, which sent energy prices rocketing globally. Starmer has tried to position Britain at the centre of a coalition to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. He broke with Trump early in the war by refusing U.S. permission to use British bases for offensive strikes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Starmer also refused to directly address Trump\u2019s threat that \u201ca whole civilization will die\u201d if Iran did not reopen the Strait. He said it was \u201cnot language I would use\u201d and that British values would guide his decisions. The Prime Minister also ratcheted up criticism of Israel over deadly strikes inside Lebanon during the ceasefire. He stopped short of calling the strikes a formal breach of the agreement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cBut let me be really clear about it. They\u2019re wrong. That shouldn\u2019t be happening. That should stop,\u201d Starmer said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">White House spokeswoman Anna Kelly defended Trump\u2019s actions in a statement.
