Liberals slammed House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) on Wednesday for awarding President\u00a0Donald Trump\u00a0a newly created award.<\/p>\n
Johnson presented<\/a> Trump with a golden statue at the annual National Republican Congressional Committee fundraiser<\/a>, announcing that the committee had created the honor as a \u201ctoken of our appreciation for his leadership.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cWe\u2019re going to do something we\u2019ve never done before. We\u2019re going to honor him with a new award that we\u2019ll present annually from this point forward. But he is the suitable and fitting recipient of the first-ever America First Award,\u201d said Johnson. \u201cWe could think of no better title for what that is. That\u2019s this beautiful golden statue here. Appropriate for the new golden era in America.\u201d<\/p>\n Many on the left were quick to decry the move, calling out the Republican Party for its fawning treatment of the president.<\/p>\n \u201cThey have to treat the President like a child,\u201d wrote Rep. Seth Magaziner (D-RI). \u201cSo embarrassing for everyone involved.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cMike Johnson created a new award for Trump and gave him a trophy,\u201d wrote MeidasTouch founder Ron Filipkowski. \u201cThe Republican Party is an endless clown show.\u201d<\/p>\n Some focused on the personal embarrassment for Johnson, with Bulwark founder\u00a0Sarah Longwell\u00a0wondering how the speaker didn\u2019t \u201cspontaneously combust with embarrassment.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019ll never understand how displays like this don\u2019t cause people to spontaneously combust with embarrassment,\u201d she wrote.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s a perennial problem that politics attracts the kind of person willing to debase themselves in front of cameras like this,\u201d wrote Vox journalist Sean Illing.<\/p>\n Others pointed to the optics of awarding the president an expensive gift during the ongoing partial government shutdown<\/a>, which has forced scores of government employees<\/a> to go without pay.<\/p>\n \u201cMore gold statues for Donald Trump while TSA agents wait for paychecks?!
