WASHINGTON \u2013 As U.S. Rep. Tony Gonzales faces calls to resign amid allegations he had an affair with a former staffer, House Speaker Mike Johnson also weighed in on the accusations Monday. <\/p>\n
Last week, KSAT Investigates confirmed Regina Santos-Aviles<\/a>, who died last year after setting herself on fire, separated from her husband<\/a> after he discovered through \u201csexual\u201d text messages that she had an affair with the congressman.<\/p>\n KSAT Investigates<\/p>\n Hard-hitting journalism from the KSAT Investigates team delivered straight to your inbox.<\/p>\n Aviles released some of the sexually explicit text messages<\/a> with KSAT Investigates on Monday.<\/p>\n After public pressure from Gonzales<\/a>, Uvalde police released the reports<\/a> from Santos-Aviles\u2019 death that was previously sealed. <\/p>\n Hours later, CNN reporter Manu Raju<\/a> asked Johnson why he wouldn\u2019t call for Gonzales\u2019 resignation.<\/p>\n \u201cThere are serious accusations, and it must be taken seriously, and I\u2019ve told him he\u2019s got to address that with his constituents,\u201d responded Johnson, adding that Gonzales is \u201cin the process of doing that.\u201d<\/p>\n Johnson said investigations into Gonzales need to \u201cplay out.\u201d<\/p>\n KSAT Investigates confirmed last week the Office of Congressional Conduct opened an ethics investigation<\/a> into U.S. Rep. Tony Gonzales months before allegations he had an affair with Santos-Aviles became public. <\/p>\n \u201cIf the accusation of something is going to be the litmus test for someone being able to continue to serve in the House, you\u2019ll have a lot of people would have to resign or be removed or expelled from Congress,\u201d Johnson added. <\/p>\n Gonzales and his office have refused to answer KSAT\u2019s multiple requests for comment about the affair since September, including three emails sent Monday. <\/p>\n KSAT caught up with Gonzales in November<\/a>, where the congressman dodged questions about the alleged affair. <\/p>\n
