Christian Democratic leader Sari Essayah and Finns Party parliamentary group chair Jani Mäkelä accused Valtonen of acting independently.

Foreign Trade and Development Minister Ville Tavio of the Finns Party later said Finland was not preparing restrictions on settlement products and that he would not support such measures at EU level.

The SDP also criticised Tavio’s decision to end Finnish funding for the UN agency for Palestinian refugees, UNRWA, describing the organisation as an important provider of humanitarian assistance in the region.

Another point of contention is Defence Minister Antti Häkkänen’s recent visit to Israel, where he met Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz. The SDP questioned whether the trip had been coordinated with Finland’s broader foreign and security policy leadership and whether Häkkänen raised alleged violations of international law during the meeting.

Häkkänen has rejected criticism that the visit was intended to send a political signal. Speaking in parliament on Wednesday, he described such claims as politically invented and said meeting his Israeli counterpart was consistent with normal diplomatic practice.

The SDP has also pointed to disagreements surrounding recognition of a Palestinian state. President Alexander Stubb has said he would be prepared to recognise Palestine if the government formally brought the matter forward, while the government has not done so.

According to the SDP, the differences between ministers and governing parties are damaging Finland’s credibility internationally and have prevented the country from presenting a consistent position on Israel’s genocidal war against Palestine.

The governing National Coalition Party has pushed back against the opposition’s criticism. Shortly after the SDP announcement, National Coalition MPs Sofia Vikman and Jarno Limnell accused the party of turning foreign and security policy into an instrument of domestic politics.

Under Finland’s parliamentary system, MPs can vote on confidence in an individual minister or the entire government. The SDP’s motion will be considered by Parliament in a plenary session.

HT

Finland’s opposition Social Democratic Party (SDP) will seek a vote of no confidence in Prime Minister Petteri Orpo’s…

[133
360,101544,108863,17565,2058,10454,8057,243,68088,108861,317,52550,1871,18347,15289,108862
post-250254","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-alexander-stubb","tag-alexander-stubb","tag-antti-hakkanen","tag-antti-lindtman","tag-elina-valtonen","tag-finland","tag-finnish-government","tag-finnish-politics","tag-israel","tag-middle-east-policy","tag-no-confidence-vote","tag-palestine","tag-palestinian-state","tag-petteri-orpo","tag-sdp","tag-unrwa","tag-ville-tavio
["GET
