Kaja Kallas says the EU does not understand US actions in the Hormuz Strait as blockade measures raise concerns over global shipping and energy routes.<\/p>\n
In\u00a0an\u00a0interview with the BBC, EU\u00a0foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said European officials still do\u00a0not fully understand what the United States is\u00a0doing in\u00a0the Hormuz Strait.<\/p>\n
Kallas said Washington\u2019s\u00a0exact actions remain unclear, but stressed that one principle must remain non-negotiable: no\u00a0fees or\u00a0charges for using these routes should be\u00a0treated as\u00a0legitimate. She emphasized that these shipping lanes have always been open to\u00a0all.<\/p>\n
She also warned that any disruption to\u00a0traffic through the strait, a\u00a0key corridor for energy supplies and fertilizers, would inflict serious damage on\u00a0the rest of\u00a0the world. For that reason, she said, the route must remain open.<\/p>\n
At\u00a0the same time, Kallas noted that Europe, together with other countries, is\u00a0prepared to\u00a0use its capabilities to\u00a0help ensure safe navigation in\u00a0the Hormuz Strait, though only after the fighting ends.<\/p>\n
A\u00a0day earlier, the United States began a\u00a0blockade of\u00a0the Hormuz Strait after talks with Iran collapsed.
