Amazon said Tuesday it would acquire Globalstar\u00a0in an $11.57 billion deal, bolstering its fledgling satellite business<\/a> as it tries to catch up with Elon\u00a0Musk\u2019s Starlink<\/a>.<\/p>\n Tech companies are pouring in billions of dollars to capture the lucrative market for satellite-based connectivity, but it will be a tall order to match Starlink\u2019s 10,000-unit-strong network.<\/p>\n Through the deal, Amazon adds Globalstar\u2019s two dozen satellites to its existing network of more than 200.<\/p>\n Amazon said Tuesday it would acquire Globalstar in an $11.57 billion deal, bolstering its fledgling satellite business. REUTERS<\/p>\n Amazon has been working to ramp up its network by deploying about 3,200 satellites in Earth\u2019s low orbit by 2029, with roughly half required to be in place by a July regulatory deadline.<\/p>\n It\u00a0is also\u00a0preparing to roll out its satellite internet services later this year.<\/p>\n Globalstar\u2019s\u00a0satellite network is\u00a0designed for reliable, low-data connections directly to mobile devices, or\u00a0Direct-to-Device (D2D).<\/p>\n The technology removes\u00a0the need for devices to connect to ground-based cellular towers, making them crucial in powering emergency services and delivering connectivity in areas with limited cellular coverage.<\/p>\n The deal will\u00a0help Amazon deploy D2D\u00a0from\u00a02028, the companies said.<\/p>\n Meanwhile, Starlink already serves more than nine million users globally.<\/p>\n The SpaceX unit, which provides\u00a0high-speed broadband through user terminals, is also developing D2D services through partnerships with telecom operators such as T-Mobile.<\/p>\n \u201cAmazon has been falling behind Starlink on satellite broadband. Acquiring Globalstar allows them to catch-up on their D2D spectrum position, and leap ahead on D2D deployment,\u201d said Armand Musey, president & founder of Summit Ridge Group.<\/p>\n Shares of\u00a0Louisiana-based Globalstar\u00a0rose more than\u00a09% in early trading, after gaining over 6% in the past two weeks\u00a0on\u00a0media reports of the companies\u2019 discussions.<\/p>\n Amazon\u2019s move comes closely on the heels of Elon Musk\u2019s SpaceX moving forward with its plan for a stock market listing. I expect this trend to continue,\u201d said Austin Moeller, director of equity research at Canaccord Genuity.<\/p>\n Under the Amazon deal, the satellite firm\u2019s shareholders can elect to receive either $90 in cash or 0.3210 shares of Amazon common stock for each share of Globalstar they own, the companies said.<\/p>\n That represents a premium of more than 31% to Globalstar\u2019s closing price on April 1, the day before reports of deal discussions emerged.<\/p>\n The acquisition is expected to close next year, subject to regulatory approvals and achievement of specific deployment milestones by Globalstar.<\/p>\n Starlink already serves more than nine million users globally.
