OpenAI\u2019s corporate security team sent a note to employees about the incident on Friday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cAt approximately 3:45am PT, an unidentified individual approached Sam\u2019s residence and threw an incendiary device toward the property. The device landed nearby and extinguished. There were no injuries and only minimal damage was reported,\u201d the message to staff reads.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cShortly afterward, an individual matching the suspect\u2019s description was contacted by security outside MB1,\u201d the message continues, referring to OpenAI\u2019s headquarters in San Francisco\u2019s Mission Bay neighborhood. \u201cThis person made threatening statements about the building.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">OpenAI\u2019s corporate security team told staff it is cooperating with law enforcement on an investigation, and that employees may notice an increased police and security presence around the office on Friday. The security team said that the company\u2019s offices remain open, but employees were advised to \u201cnot let anyone tailgate into the building.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The San Francisco Police Department did not respond to a request for comment. In a <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/x.com\/SFPD\/status\/2042651827905380461?s=20\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/x.com\/SFPD\/status\/2042651827905380461?s=20&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/SFPD\/status\/2042651827905380461?s=20\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">statement shared on social media<\/a>, the police said that at approximately 4:12 am, officers responded to a fire investigation in the North Beach neighborhood of San Francisco. An &#8220;incendiary device\u201d had been thrown at a residential property, which caused an exterior gate to light on fire. The suspect fled on foot.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Less than an hour later, a person who police recognized as the same suspect was found outside of OpenAI\u2019s offices threatening to burn down the building. Officers detained the suspect, an unidentified 20-year-old male, and arrested him on the scene.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">No injuries have been reported, and charges are still pending, SFPD said in the statement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cEarly this morning, someone threw a Molotov cocktail at Sam Altman\u2019s home and also made threats at our San Francisco headquarters. Thankfully, no one was hurt,\u201d said OpenAI spokesperson Kayla Wood in an email to WIRED. \u201cWe deeply appreciate how quickly SFPD responded and the support from the city in helping keep our employees safe. The individual is in custody, and we\u2019re assisting law enforcement with their investigation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">This is the latest incident in which OpenAI\u2019s office and staff have been threatened. In November of last year, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/openai-office-lockdown-threat-san-francisco\/\" class=\"text link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">OpenAI locked down its San Francisco office<\/a> following an alleged threat from an activist.
