{"id":30841,"date":"2026-04-18T01:45:19","date_gmt":"2026-04-18T01:45:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/people\/30841\/"},"modified":"2026-04-18T01:45:19","modified_gmt":"2026-04-18T01:45:19","slug":"leaders-from-spain-brazil-unite-against-war-rise-of-the-right","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/people\/30841\/","title":{"rendered":"Leaders from Spain, Brazil unite against war, rise of the right"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Spanish Prime Minister Pedro S\u00e1nchez and Brazilian President Luiz In\u00e1cio Lula da Silva on Friday spoke out for peace, democracy and international cooperation following a meeting in Barcelona.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Both leaders also called for a world order that respects the sovereignty of states.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;While others are reopening wounds, we want to heal them,&#8221; S\u00e1nchez told a press conference coinciding with the opening of the two-day First Spain-Brazil Summit in the Catalan city.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;We are witnessing a new arms race with dismay,&#8221; Lula lamented to journalists gathered at the Pedralbes Palace. &#8220;I completely understand when you say: No to war,&#8221; he told his counterpart.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">S\u00e1nchez stressed that the governments in Madrid and Bras\u00edlia share a worldview characterized by &#8220;the defence of democracy and respect for international law, human rights, and peace.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Earlier, the leaders signed agreements on critical raw materials, greater bilateral cooperation in science, technology, and innovation, as well as gender equality and combating violence against women.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The summit in Barcelona is considered the first in a series of international gatherings of left-wing, social-democratic and other progressive forces as a counterweight to the global right.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">According to the Spanish government, the event held in the current turbulent times is about &#8220;defending democracy and multilateralism.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Saturday&#8217;s fourth &#8220;In Defence of Democracy&#8221; initiative is also expected to be attended by Colombian President Gustavo Petro, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa and EU Council President Ant\u00f3nio Costa.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The concurrent &#8220;Global Progressive Mobilisation&#8221; event will involve representatives from around 40 countries.<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"Spanish Prime Minister Pedro S\u00e1nchez welcomes Brazilian President Luiz In\u00e1cio Lula da Silva in Barcelona ahead of the first Spain-Brazil bilateral summit, formalizing high-level relations.
