While the timing and scale of these cuts remain undecided, executives are expected to refine plans based on how AI capabilities evolve in the coming months.

A previous Reuters report indicated that the company could reduce 20% or more of its global workforce. However, Meta has declined to comment on the scope or timing of any upcoming layoffs. The move reflects CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s ongoing strategy to invest heavily in AI, with spending running into hundreds of billions of dollars to reconfigure operations and drive productivity gains.

This shift mirrors broader trends across the tech sector. Amazon has cut around 30,000 corporate roles—nearly 10% of its white-collar workforce—while Block reduced nearly half its staff earlier this year, both citing AI-driven efficiencies.

Industry-wide, layoffs continue to mount. Layoffs.fyi estimates that 73,212 tech employees have lost their jobs so far this year, following 153,000 job cuts across 2024. For Meta, the current restructuring marks its most significant workforce shift since the 2022–2023 “year of efficiency,” when it eliminated approximately 21,000 roles.

Despite being in a stronger financial position today—with over $200 billion in revenue and $60 billion in profit last year—Meta is pursuing a leaner organisational model. The company aims to reduce management layers and rely more on AI-assisted roles.

As of December-end, Meta employed nearly 79,000 people. Recent organisational changes include restructuring within its Reality Labs division and redeploying engineers into a new “Applied AI” unit focused on developing autonomous AI agents. Some employees are also being reassigned to the newly formed small business unit, signalling a broader workforce realignment alongside potential job cuts.

Published On Apr 20, 2026 at 10:01 AM IST

Join the community of 2M+ industry professionals.
Subscribe to Newsletter to get latest insights & analysis in your inbox.

All about ETHRWorldSEA industry right on your smartphone!

Meta is preparing for another round of layoffs in the second half of the year, according to multiple…

[154
22857,22859,618,2000,22858,22856,7648,7646,992,22860
post-34230","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-mark-zuckerberg","tag-ai-efficiency","tag-corporate-layoffs-2024","tag-mark-zuckerberg","tag-mark-zuckerberg-ai-strategy","tag-meta-ai-initiatives","tag-meta-layoffs-2024","tag-meta-restructuring","tag-meta-workforce-reduction","tag-tech-industry-layoffs","tag-workforce-realignment
["GET
