California Gov. Gavin Newsom<\/a> (D) didn\u2019t waste time in pointing out White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt<\/a>\u2019s awkward choice of words to promote President Donald Trump<\/a>\u2019s support of psychedelic drugs as treatment for mental illness. <\/p>\n

Trump on Saturday signed an executive order<\/a> directing the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to \u201cexpedite their review of certain psychedelics already designated as breakthrough therapy drugs\u201d for conditions including depression and anxiety.<\/p>\n

On Monday, Leavitt touted the executive order with a post on X <\/a>that included a link to a \u201cFact Sheet\u201d issued by the White House. <\/p>\n

\u201cPresident Donald J. Trump is Accelerating Medical Treatments for Serious Mental Illness,\u201d she wrote. <\/p>\n

True to form, Newsom noted Leavitt\u2019s phrasing left the intended recipient(s) of those treatments open-ended. <\/p>\n

\u201cFor himself?\u201d he wrote on X<\/a>, via his press office. <\/p>\n

Other public officials, including Bakari Sellers<\/a> and journalist Aaron Rupar<\/a>, cheekily shared similar sentiments. <\/p>\n

\u201cThank GOD, he\u2019s getting the help he needs,\u201d wrote Sellers<\/a>. a Democrat and former member of the South Carolina House of Representatives. <\/p>\n

Added Rupar<\/a>: \u201cwe\u2019ve noticed and i\u2019m glad he\u2019s getting help.\u201d <\/p>\n

At a press conference held Saturday at the Oval Office, Trump said the order was intended \u201cfor a lot of people, but it\u2019s for our military in particular.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI got a call from a number of people including the great Joe Rogan, and he said we have to do something about this,\u201d he added<\/a>, before a crowd that included both the podcaster and Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.<\/a> <\/p>\n

As Newsom and others suggest, however, Trump\u2019s signing of the order comes amid heightened scrutiny<\/a> of his own mental acuity, particularly as he\u2019s repeatedly criticized Pope Leo XIV<\/a> and embraced extreme rhetoric<\/a> with regard to the Iran war.<\/p>\n

Far-right conspiracy theorist Alex Jones<\/a>, who until recently has been loyal to the president, recently described<\/a> Trump\u2019s actions as those of \u201can unhinged super villain from a Marvel<\/a> comic movie,\u201d and even suggested<\/a> \u201cwe 25th Amendment his ass.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"California Gov.
