{"id":40761,"date":"2026-04-24T03:29:11","date_gmt":"2026-04-24T03:29:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/people\/40761\/"},"modified":"2026-04-24T03:29:11","modified_gmt":"2026-04-24T03:29:11","slug":"multiple-house-republicans-defy-proposed-3-year-fisa-section-702-extension","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/people\/40761\/","title":{"rendered":"Multiple House Republicans defy proposed 3-year FISA Section 702 extension"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">(The Center Square) \u2013 After two attempts last week to reauthorize a controversial spy power of the federal government, House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., has unveiled the text of a three-year extension.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The new proposal, however, fails to include key privacy reforms that dozens of House Republicans are demanding to Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, which expires April 30.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cThe United States Constitution is NOT a suggestion \u2013 the Fourth Amendment is the law of the land,\u201d Rep. Keith Self, R-Texas, posted on X after the <a data-yga=\"{\" ylinkelement=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/rules.house.gov\/sites\/evo-subsites\/republicans-rules.house.gov\/files\/documents\/rcp_s-fisa_xml_0.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"elm:link;elmt:article_link;slk:bill text;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">bill text<\/a> dropped Thursday. \u201cWarrantless searches of American citizens are ongoing. We cannot allow this gross abuse of government overreach to continue.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Self had voted with more than a dozen other House Republicans <a data-yga=\"{\" ylinkelement=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/news\/articles\/congress-passes-fisa-section-702-170500024.html\" data-ylk=\"elm:link;elmt:article_link;slk:to tank both a five-year extension and an 18-month extension;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">to tank both a five-year extension and an 18-month extension<\/a> of FISA Section 702 last Friday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">On paper, FISA Section 702 allows federal intelligence agencies to conduct warrantless electronic surveillance on foreign nationals of suspicion.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">But in practice, the electronic data of American citizens \u2013 including emails, text messages, and phone calls \u2013 are routinely collected as well.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The major controversy lies in the fact that federal intelligence agents will routinely search through that database without obtaining a warrant, which many critics view as a violation of Americans\u2019 Fourth Amendment Rights.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">As part of the overall pushback against warrantless surveillance, Reps. Thomas Massie, R-Ky., and Lauren Boebert, R-Colo., introduced the <a data-yga=\"{\" ylinkelement=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/massie.house.gov\/uploadedfiles\/surveillance_accountability_act.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"elm:link;elmt:article_link;slk:Surveillance Accountability Act;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Surveillance Accountability Act<\/a> on Thursday as well.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The bill would not only prohibit federal agencies from searching or obtaining Americans\u2019 metadata without a warrant based on probable cause, but would also allow individuals to sue for damages if the federal government infringes on their Fourth Amendment rights.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cThere\u2019s been a lot of talk about FISA and [Section] 702 and warrants for the past few weeks now, but I don\u2019t think that\u2019s where the issue ultimately lies,\u201d Boebert told reporters. \u201cSure, it is a problem when anyone, any American citizen is looked into without a warrant, but it doesn\u2019t end under FISA, it doesn\u2019t end under 702.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Declassified government documents and oversight reports show that federal intelligence agencies have performed millions of these so-called \u201cbackdoor searches\u201d since FISA Section 702 was created, <a data-yga=\"{\" ylinkelement=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dni.gov\/files\/CLPT\/documents\/2025_ASTR_for_CY2024.pdf#page=27\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"elm:link;elmt:article_link;slk:including 57,000 in 2023 alone;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">including 57,000 in 2023 alone<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The House Rules Committee will meet Monday to mark up the three-year extension.
