Now Lauren S\u00e1nchez Bezos leads the charge to spend it"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In 2020, Jeff Bezos made what remains the largest individual philanthropic commitment to climate and nature ever: <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.bezosearthfund.org\/who-we-are\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bezosearthfund.org\/who-we-are\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">$10 billion<\/a>, to be fully <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.bezosearthfund.org\/\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bezosearthfund.org\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">disbursed<\/a> by 2030 through the Bezos Earth Fund.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But five years in, the fund has deployed roughly <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/07\/15\/jeff-bezos-taps-tom-taylor-earth-fund.html\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/07\/15\/jeff-bezos-taps-tom-taylor-earth-fund.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">$2.3 billion<\/a> of that commitment, leaving about $7 billion to go out the door before the 2020s end. Lauren S\u00e1nchez Bezos, who married Bezos last summer, is now the person setting the pace at the Bezos Earth Fund as vice chair, a position she\u2019s held since the fund\u2019s early days, when she was just his girlfriend.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>During the past year, S\u00e1nchez Bezos, who is also a New York Times bestselling author, founder, helicopter pilot, and Emmy Award\u2013winning journalist, has become the more visible figure in the couple\u2019s philanthropic orbit. In September 2025, she <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.bezosearthfund.org\/news-and-insights\/bezos-earth-fund-invests-accelerate-pacific-led-ocean-protection\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bezosearthfund.org\/news-and-insights\/bezos-earth-fund-invests-accelerate-pacific-led-ocean-protection\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">announced<\/a> $37.5 million in grants to support marine protection across 12 Pacific Island nations and territories, part of a $100 million commitment to what the fund calls one of the boldest ocean conservation efforts ever attempted.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Pacific isn\u2019t just a beautiful backdrop, it\u2019s a lifeline,\u201d she said in a statement. \u201cPacific Island nations and territories are setting the pace. We\u2019re here to match that ambition and help turn it into protection at scale.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then in October, she\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.bezosearthfund.org\/news-and-insights\/bezos-earth-fund-announces-30-million-in-ai-grand-challenge-awards\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bezosearthfund.org\/news-and-insights\/bezos-earth-fund-announces-30-million-in-ai-grand-challenge-awards\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">unveiled $30 million<\/a>\u00a0in Phase II awards for the fund\u2019s AI Grand Challenge for Climate and Nature, a program that commits\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.bezosearthfund.org\/initiatives\/ai-for-climate-and-nature\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bezosearthfund.org\/initiatives\/ai-for-climate-and-nature\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">up to $100 million<\/a>\u00a0to AI-driven environmental solutions.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAI can be a powerful ally to help make the world a better place,\u201d she said in a statement. \u201cThese innovators, using AI, are showing us new possibilities by reimagining how we grow food, protect wildlife, and power our planet to make a true impact.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In addition to environmental philanthropic giving, S\u00e1nchez Bezos announced in December a $102.5 million commitment to organizations combating homelessness across the U.S. That commitment is part of the Bezos Day 1 Families Fund, which has donated more than $850 million to organizations in all 50 states, Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico, and Guam. Founded in 2018, the Day 1 Families Fund made a $2 billion commitment to support existing nonprofits helping families experiencing homelessness and to build and operate a network of new, tuition-free preschools in under-resourced communities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is just the beginning,\u201d S\u00e1nchez Bezos told Good Morning America. \u201cIt\u2019s a $2 billion commitment \u2026 and we\u2019re going to continue doing it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Weeks later, the couple awarded a <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2025\/12\/17\/jeff-bezos-and-lauren-sanchez-bezos-donate-5-million-to-neurodivergent-education-leader\/\" href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2025\/12\/17\/jeff-bezos-and-lauren-sanchez-bezos-donate-5-million-to-neurodivergent-education-leader\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">$5 million grant<\/a> and the <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/article\/how-much-does-jeff-bezos-give-to-charity-philanthropy-wife-lauren-sanchez-eva-longoria\/\" href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/article\/how-much-does-jeff-bezos-give-to-charity-philanthropy-wife-lauren-sanchez-eva-longoria\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Bezos Courage &amp; Civility Award<\/a> to David Flink, founder of the Neurodiversity Alliance\u2014a cause with personal resonance for S\u00e1nchez Bezos, who grew up with undiagnosed dyslexia and has said her children\u2019s book was written for \u201cthe 8-year-old me who was told I wasn\u2019t smart.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>From food systems to nuclear energy, a $10 billion bet takes shape<\/p>\n<p>The fund\u2019s portfolio is sprawling, including <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.bezosearthfund.org\/our-programs\/future-of-food\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bezosearthfund.org\/our-programs\/future-of-food\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">$1 billion<\/a> committed to transforming food and agriculture systems; <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.worldwildlife.org\/our-work\/funds\/bezos-earth-fund\/\" href=\"https:\/\/www.worldwildlife.org\/our-work\/funds\/bezos-earth-fund\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">$100 million<\/a> awarded to the World Wildlife Fund for nature-based climate solutions; <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.bezosearthfund.org\/news-and-insights\/bezos-earth-fund-announces-110-million-nature-climate-science-monitoring-governance\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bezosearthfund.org\/news-and-insights\/bezos-earth-fund-announces-110-million-nature-climate-science-monitoring-governance\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">$110 million<\/a> for habitat restoration and climate science; and a recent <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.bezosearthfund.org\/news-and-insights\/bezos-earth-fund-to-accelerate-48-transformative-climate-and-nature-solutions-in-collaboration-with-the-earthshot-prize\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bezosearthfund.org\/news-and-insights\/bezos-earth-fund-to-accelerate-48-transformative-climate-and-nature-solutions-in-collaboration-with-the-earthshot-prize\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">$4.8 million partnership<\/a> with the Earthshot Prize to fund 48 climate innovation projects globally. In February, the fund announced a <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.bezosearthfund.org\/news-and-insights\/nuclear-scaling-initiative-us-reactor-orderbook\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bezosearthfund.org\/news-and-insights\/nuclear-scaling-initiative-us-reactor-orderbook\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">$3.5 million grant<\/a> to accelerate the deployment of nuclear energy.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But the fund is also in transition. In July 2025, Bezos <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/07\/15\/jeff-bezos-taps-tom-taylor-earth-fund.html\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/07\/15\/jeff-bezos-taps-tom-taylor-earth-fund.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">tapped<\/a> former <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/amazon-com\/\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/amazon-com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Amazon<\/a> Alexa division head Tom Taylor to serve as the fund\u2019s new CEO, replacing Andrew Steer, former head of an environmental think tank who had led the organization since 2021. The hire signaled a shift toward operational execution as the 2030 spend-down deadline approaches.<\/p>\n<p>$4.7 billion in a lifetime vs. $7.2 billion in a year <\/p>\n<p>Even with $10 billion committed to climate change, the scale of the Bezoses\u2019 giving seems modest relative to the fortune behind it.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Bezos\u2019s <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/billionaires\/profiles\/jeffrey-p-bezos\/\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/billionaires\/profiles\/jeffrey-p-bezos\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">net worth<\/a> is currently estimated at $268 billion, making him the third-richest man in the world, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index. But Forbes estimates the couple\u2019s lifetime charitable contributions at about <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/forbeswealthteam\/2026\/02\/09\/americas-top-25-philanthropists---and-why-musk-page-and-ellison-arent-on-the-list\/\" href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/forbeswealthteam\/2026\/02\/09\/americas-top-25-philanthropists---and-why-musk-page-and-ellison-arent-on-the-list\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">$4.7 billion<\/a>, less than 2% of Bezos\u2019s net worth.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Bezos\u2019s ex-wife, MacKenzie Scott, has been on a major giving spree during the past five years, having donated an eye-popping <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2026\/01\/13\/mackenzie-scott-26-billion-philanthropy-playbook-saving-organizations-federal-funding-cuts\/\" href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2026\/01\/13\/mackenzie-scott-26-billion-philanthropy-playbook-saving-organizations-federal-funding-cuts\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">$26 billion<\/a> to thousands of organizations. Her current net worth is estimated at $42.1 billion. That means she\u2019s donated well over half of her net worth to charity, although her net worth continues to grow despite her massive donations, thanks to the\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2025\/11\/07\/mackenzie-scott-19-billion-charitable-donations-amazon-shares-net-worth\/\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2025\/11\/07\/mackenzie-scott-19-billion-charitable-donations-amazon-shares-net-worth\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">power of Amazon shares<\/a>\u00a0that keep growing her fortune.<\/p>\n<p>Another way to look at it is that, in 2025 alone, Scott donated $7.2 billion, which\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2026\/02\/26\/mackenzie-scott-more-generous-philanthropist-than-ex-husband-jeff-bezos-amazon-founder-billionaire\/\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2026\/02\/26\/mackenzie-scott-more-generous-philanthropist-than-ex-husband-jeff-bezos-amazon-founder-billionaire\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">exceeds Bezos\u2019s entire lifetime of\u00a0<\/a><a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2026\/02\/26\/mackenzie-scott-more-generous-philanthropist-than-ex-husband-jeff-bezos-amazon-founder-billionaire\/\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2026\/02\/26\/mackenzie-scott-more-generous-philanthropist-than-ex-husband-jeff-bezos-amazon-founder-billionaire\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">charitable giving<\/a>. Scott also signed the Giving Pledge, the commitment launched by Bill Gates, Melinda French Gates, and Warren Buffett in 2010 that encourages billionaires to donate the majority of their wealth to philanthropic causes.<\/p>\n<p>Bezos has not signed it. In a 2022 CNN interview, he said he intends to give away the majority of his wealth during his lifetime but acknowledged the difficulty of doing so effectively. He even compared the difficulty of philanthropy to building Amazon, the <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/article\/amazon-overtakes-walmart-fortune-500-doug-mcmilon-andy-jassy-retail-tech\/\" href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/article\/amazon-overtakes-walmart-fortune-500-doug-mcmilon-andy-jassy-retail-tech\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">No. 1 Fortune 500 company<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not easy.
