So my baseline is that it will take until the end of my term.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>CENTRAL BANKS EMBROILED IN &#8220;HIGH POLITICS&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a data-testid=\"Link\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/finance\/ecb-president-lagarde-tells-colleagues-she-is-still-focused-her-post-2026-02-19\/\" class=\"text-module__text__0GDob text-module__inherit-color__PhuPF text-module__inherit-font__1P1hv text-module__inherit-size__EyiQW link-module__link__INqxZ link-module__underline_default__-okuC\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Reuters exclusively reported<\/a> that Lagarde had sent a private message to fellow policymakers reassuring them that she was still concentrating on her job and that they would hear it from her, rather than the press, if she wanted to step down.The ECB has said that <a data-testid=\"Link\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/ecbs-lagarde-hasnt-taken-any-decision-on-term-spokesperson-says-e96cd80a?mod=article_inline\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" class=\"text-module__text__0GDob text-module__inherit-color__PhuPF text-module__inherit-font__1P1hv text-module__inherit-size__EyiQW link-module__link__INqxZ link-module__underline_default__-okuC link-module__with-icon__qlg76\">Lagarde has not made a decision, opens new tab<\/a> about the end of her term, but stopped short of denying the FT report.<\/p>\n<p>Some analysts thought an early exit risked tangling the ECB up in European politics as it could give the impression of trying to make sure France&#8217;s eurosceptic far right, which could win next year&#8217;s presidential vote, had no say in her succession.<\/p>\n<p>Lagarde said last year she intended to complete her term, a commitment she has conspicuously failed to repeat this week.<\/p>\n<p>Bank of France Governor Francois Villeroy de Galhau announced plans to step down from his job last week, in a move that gives President Macron a chance to pick the next French central bank chief, drawing sharp criticism from the far-right who called the move anti-democratic.<\/p>\n<p>Villeroy&#8217;s early departure and the confusion about Lagarde&#8217;s future come just as U.S. President Donald Trump is <a data-testid=\"Link\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/us\/trump-picks-former-fed-official-warsh-run-fed-2026-01-30\/\" class=\"text-module__text__0GDob text-module__inherit-color__PhuPF text-module__inherit-font__1P1hv text-module__inherit-size__EyiQW link-module__link__INqxZ link-module__underline_default__-okuC\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">attacking the Federal Reserve<\/a>, further stoking debates about central bank independence from politics.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;After the recent events in the U.S., this is another reminder that although central banks are nominally independent, who leads them and their worldview is a matter for high politics,&#8221; economists at Oxford Economics wrote on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>As the head of the euro zone&#8217;s second largest economy, the French president plays an important role in wider negotiations to select the head of the ECB.<\/p>\n<p>Polls show either far-right National Rally leader Marine Le Pen, or her protege Jordan Bardella, could win the French presidency.<\/p>\n<p>While the party has long dropped a call for France to leave the euro, it is still seen as something of an <a data-testid=\"Link\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/frances-far-right-climbs-polls-stalls-boardrooms-2026-02-11\/\" class=\"text-module__text__0GDob text-module__inherit-color__PhuPF text-module__inherit-font__1P1hv text-module__inherit-size__EyiQW link-module__link__INqxZ link-module__underline_default__-okuC\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">unknown quantity<\/a> in central banking circles.<\/p>\n<p>Lagarde told the WSJ that she viewed her mission as price and financial stability, as well as &#8220;protecting the euro, making sure that it is solid and strong and fit for the future of Europe.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>She also said that the World Economic Forum was &#8220;one of the many options&#8221;
