It is in our interest, and I believe it is in the interest of both countries,\u201d Magyar said in response to a question from the South China Morning Post at a press conference on Monday.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">He also signalled openness to Chinese investment, but set clear conditions, saying foreign firms must comply with Hungarian and European Union environmental, health and occupational safety rules, and must deliver tangible benefits to the Hungarian economy.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">\u201cWe can indeed review these investments, but not with the aim of blocking them or preventing them from happening,\u201d Magyar said.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">\u201cWe want to position Hungarian companies as partners at BYD, CATL [Contemporary Amperex Technology Ltd] and other major investors, and I believe we will be able to cooperate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">Magyar used the Chinese-sponsored railroad between Budapest and Belgrade as an example of something not in Hungary\u2019s interests, saying it was built with Chinese money, technology and workers, primarily for Chinese benefit, and funded by \u201can enormous sum of money that is sorely missing from Hungary\u2019s own railway development\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"The Danube river and the parliament building in Budapest. Photo: AP<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">The railway is a key part of China\u2019s One Belt, One Road Initiative, which seeks to connect Budapest to the Chinese-operated Port of Piraeus in Greece. Construction has been completed and freight service is already in place.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">\u201cI believe it is in China\u2019s interest as well as ours to cooperate very well, so that both countries and both countries\u2019 companies benefit mutually.
