css-1ankfgb ecgc78b0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/topics\/sanae-takaichi?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" title=\"\" data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Sanae Takaichi<\/a> \u201cemphasised the importance of peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait and urged a peaceful resolution of cross-strait issues through constructive dialogue\u201d.The irritation for Beijing was less about the language and more about the timing, with the joint statement coming less than six months after Takaichi\u2019s <a target=\"_self\" class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb ecgc78b0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/news\/china\/diplomacy\/article\/3332224\/beijing-slams-japanese-pm-seriously-damaging-ties-over-taiwan-comment?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" title=\"\" data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">controversial comments<\/a> in November about possible Japanese military intervention in a Taiwan contingency.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">In an interview with Japanese public broadcaster NHK on April 1, Macron also said that \u201cwe do not want to be under the hegemony of China or the United States of America\u201d, though he added that Paris should \u201ccreate a mutually beneficial situation\u201d with Beijing.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">At Yonsei University in Seoul two days later, Macron referred to Beijing and Washington, saying: \u201cOur objective is not to be the vassals of two hegemonic powers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">Macron also briefly spoke with the Dalai Lama\u2019s representative to the EU, Genkhang Rigzin Choedon, at a cultural event in Paris in late March, expressing his \u201chigh esteem\u201d for the exiled Tibetan spiritual leader, Genkhang wrote on social
