Will Viktor Orb\u00e1n end up as an MEP in the European Parliament to shield himself from investigations at home?<\/p>\n

His campaign chief is now set to become an MEP, after a disastrous election result that led to a landslide victory for Hungary\u2019s incoming prime minister P\u00e9ter Magyar.<\/p>\n

If an MEP from Fidesz resigns, the system in Hungary allows Fidesz to pick anyone from that 2024 list to fill the vacancy, including Orb\u00e1n (#63).<\/p>\n

While all of this is still sheer speculation, it comes at a time when Hungary\u2019s Fidesz party enters into a prolonged period of soul searching.<\/a><\/p>\n

Orb\u00e1n, once the dominant figure in Hungarian politics, has since relinquished his parliamentary mandate in the Hungarian National Assembly in Budapest.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, segments of Hungary\u2019s business elite and oligarchs are already distancing themselves from Orb\u00e1n\u2019s crumbling power circle<\/a> or leaving the country altogether.<\/p>\n

His billionaire son\u2011in\u2011law Istv\u00e1n Tiborcz moved to New York last year. It is now unclear if he will return.<\/p>\n

Magyar, in a post, said Orb\u00e1n-linked oligarchs are also currently transferring tens of billions of forints to the United Arab Emirates, the United States, Uruguay, and other distant countries.<\/p>\n

He called on the chief prosecutor, the head of the police and the tax office to \u201cdetain the criminals\u201d and not to allow them to flee.<\/p>\n

Others, including Orb\u00e1n\u2019s childhood friend and Hungary\u2019s wealthiest man, L\u0151rinc M\u00e9sz\u00e1ros, are expected to travel to Dubai in the coming days, said Magyar.<\/p>\n

And although MEPs benefit from parliamentary immunity, that protection is not absolute and can be lifted under the right circumstances.<\/p>\n

Tam\u00e1s Deutsch, who leads the Fidesz faction in the European Parliament, had his immunity waived earlier this week over a defamation dispute with Magyar\u2019s mother.<\/p>\n
