In the last few hours, two of the key partners in the investiture majority, Junts and the PNB, have shown signs of distancing themselves from the Spanish government. While the Junts supporters joined the PP and Vox this Tuesday to overthrow the decree extending rents and the investment consortium agreed between the PSOE and ERC, the Basque nationalists suspended a meeting in Moncloa after a controversial message on social media from the PSE against Aitor Esteban. And all of this has served them to demand “respect” from Sánchez and issue him a warning in this morning’s control session in Congress: “You will know how you want to reach the electoral call, whether you want company or not”.

the Junts joined the PP and Vox this TuesdayIn his response, Sánchez tried to smooth things over: “Of course I want company, and moreover, good company, like that of the Basque Nationalist Party,” Sánchez replied, praising the “constructive opposition” of the jeltzales and, in turn, holding them up as an example for other parties. An appeal that could be directed at both Junts and the PP, which took advantage of the plenary session – coinciding with the statement of former minister José Luis Ábalos before the Supreme Court – to strongly brandish the alleged corruption cases of the PSOE.

If the PNB has shown the path of elections to Sánchez, Junts already did so a week ago. Carles Puigdemont’s party warned the Spanish president that he has been “governing without a majority for too long” and the spokesperson, Míriam Nogueras, asked him: “What argument do you have left for not calling elections?” This Wednesday, however, Sánchez has reiterated his intention to exhaust the legislature. “Elections will be called, as the Spanish Constitution states, in due time and form, in 2027

Given the evidence of parliamentary defeats, and despite the warnings from key partners, the Minister of Housing, Isabel Rodríguez, has shown faith: “I trust this parliamentary majority to continue moving forward and to protect the 3 million people who live on rent”, she said. “We are partners in a coalition government, we are also partners in the major policies that have been carried out and I am convinced that everything will be manageable.
