Washington Examiner columnist Guy Benson<\/a> criticized political rhetoric coming from House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries<\/a> (D-NY) and said there\u2019s \u201cmore of an appetite\u201d for political violence<\/a> coming from the Left<\/a> and Democrats.<\/p>\n

\u201cJeffries is following the lead of what he knows his base demands, which is not giving an inch,\u201d Benson said on Fox Business\u2019s The Evening Edit on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

Secret Service<\/a> agents captured the gunman, identified as Cole Allen, 31<\/a>. He was charged with trying to assassinate President Donald Trump<\/a>. No serious injuries were reported, but one agent is recovering after his vest was hit by gunfire.<\/p>\n

Jeffries\u2019s comments were criticized as untimely and inappropriate following what\u2019s now the third assassination attempt<\/a> against the president.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are in an era of maximum warfare everywhere, all the time,\u201d Jeffries said last week.<\/p>\n

On Monday, he stood firm and defended the comments, saying, \u201cThe notion that any of us are concerned with so-called criticism from these phony Republicans \u2026 I stand by it.\u2026 I don\u2019t give a damn about your criticism.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt called out<\/a> Democrats\u2019 rhetoric after the shooting, highlighting Jeffries\u2019s comments.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThese are Democrat elected officials calling for war against the president of the United States,\u201d Leavitt said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Benson said Jeffries is \u201cnot accepting at all that maybe things could get a little more sober and cooled down a little bit,\u201d in reference to ongoing political rhetoric.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI think it\u2019s the only answer, politically, he felt like he is allowed to give based on the attitudes \u2026 and general sentiments of the people who make up the core voting base of his party.\u201d<\/p>\n

Benson noted that there will always be people who \u201close their minds and do violent things,\u201d but that it\u2019s necessary for our leaders to reject that kind of thinking.<\/p>\n

\u201cReject people who would defend or support political violence, and unfortunately, we\u2019re seeing more of an appetite for rationalizing, justifying, or celebrating violence, particularly on the Left,\u201d Benson said.\u00a0<\/p>\n
