{"id":49795,"date":"2026-04-29T20:56:19","date_gmt":"2026-04-29T20:56:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/people\/49795\/"},"modified":"2026-04-29T20:56:19","modified_gmt":"2026-04-29T20:56:19","slug":"king-charles-nyc-visit-brings-traffic-tight-press-access-and-a-diamond-dig-from-mamdani","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/people\/49795\/","title":{"rendered":"King Charles\u2019 NYC visit brings traffic, tight press access and a diamond dig from Mamdani"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.royal.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">King Charles III<\/a> effectively reigned over Lower Manhattan on Wednesday, bringing traffic chaos, a heavy police presence, and press restrictions to the<a href=\"https:\/\/911memorial.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"> 9\/11 Memorial<\/a> \u2014 where <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amny.com\/?s=mamdani\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Mayor Zohran Mamdani<\/a> greeted the British monarch hours after saying he might urge him to return a crown jewel long disputed as a product of colonial conquest if the two spoke privately.<\/p>\n<p>Footage from inside the event showed Mamdani and Charles shaking hands and briefly conversing before the king\u2019s press secretary pushed cameras back. City Hall did not confirm what the pair discussed.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier Wednesday, Mamdani was asked what he would say if he had a private moment with Charles at the memorial. After saying the focus of the wreath-laying was honoring those killed on Sept. 11, Mamdani added: \u201cIf I was to speak to the king separately from that, I would probably encourage him to return the Koh-i-Noor diamond.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Koh-i-Noor, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/history\/true-story-koh-i-noor-diamondand-why-british-wont-give-it-back-180964660\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">now part of the British Crown Jewels<\/a>, originated in India and passed through Mughal, Persian, Afghan and Sikh rulers before the British forced 10-year-old Maharaja Duleep Singh to surrender it in 1849, along with his claim to sovereignty, after annexing Punjab.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-137846150\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/people\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/2026-04-29T180056Z_1067636125_RC26ZKAK9IYI_RTRMADP_3_USA-BRITAIN-KING.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"467\" title=\"King Charles\u2019 NYC visit brings traffic, tight press access and a diamond dig from Mamdani 2\"  \/>Britain\u2019s King Charles greets New York Gov. Yuki Iwamura\/Pool via REUTERS<\/p>\n<p>The wreath-laying ceremony honored those killed in the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks nearly 25 years after the day of infamy. Gov. Kathy Hochul and Mamdani, along with former Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who now serves as the 9\/11 Memorial chair, accompanied Charles and Queen Camilla to the somber ceremony.<\/p>\n<p>Yet it was difficult for local press to get a view of the event. Hochul\u2019s office issued RSVPs for the event, while Mamdani\u2019s office advertised the crossover as open to the press. But local reporters were ultimately kept from viewing the ceremony itself after the British Embassy had final say.<\/p>\n<p>A spokesperson for the Embassy did not respond to requests for comment at the time of publication.\n<\/p>\n<p>Traffic enforcement agents and NYPD officers lined streets around the memorial as the royal visit locked down parts of Lower Manhattan. Their New York itinerary included the 9\/11 Memorial and the New York Public Library, where Camilla was expected to donate a \u201cRoo\u201d doll to the library\u2019s Winnie-the-Pooh collection.<\/p>\n<p>In Washington, Charles addressed Congress and attended a state dinner hosted by President Donald Trump. As reported by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/live\/2026\/04\/28\/us\/king-charles-us-visit-trump\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">The New York Times<\/a>, the British King used his congressional remarks to highlight the trans-Atlantic alliance while emphasizing themes such as checks and balances and environmental protection, amid tension between the two countries over the war in Iran.
