{"id":50176,"date":"2026-04-30T03:02:08","date_gmt":"2026-04-30T03:02:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/people\/50176\/"},"modified":"2026-04-30T03:02:08","modified_gmt":"2026-04-30T03:02:08","slug":"eu-missing-the-boat-on-ai-jeopardising-its-future-lagarde-warns","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/people\/50176\/","title":{"rendered":"EU missing the boat on AI, jeopardising its future, Lagarde warns"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"yf-1fy9kyt\">FRANKFURT (Reuters) -Europe is jeopardising its own future by missing the boat on <a href=\"https:\/\/tech.yahoo.com\/ai\/\" data-ylk=\"slk:artificial intelligence;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" data-yga=\"{&quot;yLinkElement&quot;:&quot;context_link&quot;,&quot;yModuleName&quot;:&quot;content-canvas&quot;,&quot;yLinkText&quot;:&quot;artificial intelligence&quot;}\" class=\"link \" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">artificial intelligence<\/a> and must \u200bquickly remove obstacles that prevent the diffusion of this new technology,\u200c European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde said on Monday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1fy9kyt\">Firms in the U.S.\u200c and China are investing heavily in AI, generating a debate on whether this exuberance is fuelling a financial bubble or signalling a technological leap.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1fy9kyt\">&#8220;With the United States and China ahead of the field, \u2060Europe has already missed \u200cthe opportunity to be a first mover in AI,&#8221; Lagarde said in a speech in Bratislava, \u200dSlovakia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1fy9kyt\">&#8220;We still bear the costs of having been slow adopters during the last digital revolution,&#8221; the ECB president said. &#8220;We risk letting the \u200bwave of AI adoption pass us by and jeopardise Europe\u2019s \u200cfuture.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1fy9kyt\">Unlike in the case of past technological waves, AI could spread faster and deliver tangible economic gains sooner, making it urgent for the 27-nation European Union to act.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1fy9kyt\">However, simply buying AI solutions from established providers will not be enough because that will deepen \u2060Europe&#8217;s reliance on foreign entities, \u200bLagarde said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1fy9kyt\">&#8220;We must diversify critical parts \u200bof the AI supply chain and avoid single points of failure.
