The fire originated from live-fire exercises conducted by troops involved in the training. The fire spread across about 20 hectares of the camp, which is one of the largest military training grounds in France and covers an area of about 13,500 hectares.

On Thursday morning, the fire had not yet been fully extinguished due to the strong wind, but the prefecture assured that the fire is “moving slowly,” and the appropriate resources have been mobilized to fight it.

Context of the events and Orion-26 exercises

The Orion-26 exercises began in February and are currently in the fourth, final phase. In this phase up to 12,500 troops are involved. The exercises also involve 1,800 tactical vehicles, 30 helicopters and 800 combat drones, and besides France – troops from Belgium, Italy, Spain, Greece, the Netherlands and Luxembourg are taking part.

Macron on Thursday is to observe the final phase of these exercises. It is planned that the president, in particular, will fly over the training areas on a Caïman helicopter and will be present at the “live-fire” stage.

Organizers say Orion-26 is one of the largest military exercises since the start of the Cold War. Over three months about 12,500 French soldiers and partners from 24 countries will train under a scenario reminiscent of the start of Russia’s war against Ukraine.

This event demonstrates the scale of coordination and preparation of multinational exercises in the European region amid rising tensions in the international environment.

A wildfire started during live-fire drills at the Souippes camp, prompting a large response while officials say the…

[125
242,31754,31755,31753,7937,50,31634,31756
0":"post-51564","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-emmanuel-macron","8":"tag-emmanuel-macron","9":"tag-macron-visit","10":"tag-marne-fire","11":"tag-marne-fire-orion-26-macron-visit-souippes-camp-military-exercises","12":"tag-military-exercises","13":"tag-news","14":"tag-orion-26","15":"tag-souippes-camp
["GET
