California Governor Gavin Newsom lashed out at former Trump administration political advisor Katie Miller after the latter suggested that his political rhetoric incited an alleged assassination attempt against President Donald Trump during the White House Correspondents’ Association (WHCA) dinner on April 25.<\/p>\n
Further, Newsom also criticized Trump’s use of social media and past statements regarding the president’s political rivals.<\/p>\n
Gavin Newsom Responds to Katie Miller’s Remarks<\/p>\n
The much-talked about WHCA dinner took place at the Washington Hilton hotel on April 25.<\/p>\n
Attendees included Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, Vice President JD Vance and White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt.<\/p>\n
During the event, 31-year-old California resident Cole Tomas Allen allegedly attempted to assassinate the president.<\/p>\n
United States Secret Service agents stopped Allen before anyone was harmed.<\/p>\n
During an interview with Fox News, Katie said that her husband, White House Deputy Chief of Staff for Policy Stephen Miller, protected her during the shooting incident.<\/p>\n
Katie, who is now a podcast host, then talked about political violence and the current political rhetoric in the United States.<\/p>\n
Highlighting that the shooter was from the state of California, Katie called Newsom \u201cone of the worst offenders of this violent political rhetoric.\u201d<\/p>\n
She claimed that the California governor\u2019s views about conservatives influenced the shooter.<\/p>\n
Following this, Newsom responded to Katie’s remarks on social media.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat an absurd statement,\u201d Newsom wrote, adding, \u201cPolitical violence is NEVER acceptable. PERIOD.\u201d<\/p>\n
Newsom condemned the shooter’s actions and expressed relief that Trump was safe.<\/p>\n
The California governor then criticized Katie for holding him responsible for the shooting incident.<\/p>\n
“This finger pointing from people like Katie who haven\u2019t just tolerated, but amplified, Trump\u2019s dangerous rhetoric is offensive,\u201d Newsom remarked.<\/p>\n
Newsom went on, \u201cThe President has openly celebrated the deaths of his political opponents, called Democrats and immigrants \u2018vermin,\u2019 \u2018demonic\u2019 and \u2018evil\u2019 \u2018animals\u2019 who are \u2018poisoning the blood of our country.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n
Newsom accused Trump of regularly using violent language on social media and threatening to arrest and sue his critics.<\/p>\n
He remarked that the president’s actions are an \u201cattempt to overthrow our democracy.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThe same folks cheering Trump\u2019s threats don\u2019t get to rewrite the narrative now,\u201d Newsom added.<\/p>\n
Katie Miller and Gavin Newsom Have Traded Jibes in the Past<\/p>\n
Notably, Katie and Newsom also previously exchanged jibes online.<\/p>\n
On January 6, Katie reshared a post made by Newsom on X, writing, \u201cTomorrow is one year since the Palisades fire. Not a single home has been rebuilt,\u201d referring to the 2025 Los Angeles wildfire.<\/p>\n
Following this, Newsom\u2019s team responded, \u201cThe anniversary is Wednesday \u2014 not tomorrow \u2014 Katie. Oof.\u201d<\/p>\n
According to the Boston University (BU) School of Public Health, the Los Angeles wildfires caused over 400 deaths and are considered one of the region’s worst natural disasters.<\/p>\n
Newsom’s team further claimed that $22.4 billion in insurance was paid, local residents approved 2,617 permits and numerous homes were rebuilt.<\/p>\n
\u201cLA\u2019s recovery is one of the fastest in modern history \u2014 and there is MUCH more we need to do!\u201d the team said.<\/p>\n
