Bill Maher grilled Governor Gavin Newsom (D-Calif.) over his defamation suit against Fox News<\/a>, warning the politician that he was starting to sound more and more like Donald Trump.<\/p>\n

The California governor stopped by \u201cReal Time With Bill Maher\u201d on Friday, where he was asked to explain how his suit against Fox News differed from Trump\u2019s various defamation lawsuits<\/a> against legacy media.<\/p>\n

\u201cMany people would say that you are imitating him,\u201d Maher noted after the governor called out the president\u2019s \u201csewer\u201d rhetoric. \u201cAmong all the people who may \u2014 or may not \u2014 be running, you\u2019re the one who kind of imitates his style with the trolling. You\u2019re suing Fox now, I understand it.\u201d<\/p>\n

In response, Newsom noted, \u201cWe\u2019re going into discovery. Fox better look to sell or apologize for defamation.\u201d<\/p>\n

At this comment, Maher pushed back, calling out Newsom for sounding \u201cexactly\u201d like Trump in that moment.<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, don\u2019t defame. Don\u2019t lie,\u201d Newsom doubled down, which Maher reiterated sounded an awful lot like Trump\u2019s stance against the press.<\/p>\n

\u201cHere\u2019s the point, I\u2019m trying to put a mirror up to Donald Trump, and I think it\u2019s important \u2014 with a sense of humor, as well,\u201d Newsom said. \u201cThe deviation of normalcy is off the chart. This is a guy cosplaying as the pope. Dressing up as Jesus. Putting his face on Mount Rushmore. None of this is normal.\u201d<\/p>\n

Newsom then called out Fox for slamming his social media behavior \u2014 which was meant to emulate Trump\u2019s own posts \u2014 as \u201cunbecoming.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo situational awareness that their dear leader has been doing this for years and years and years,\u201d he continued. \u201cHe\u2019s a manchild. And so, I think it\u2019s important to call that out \u2026 But, again, we\u2019re not trying to dehumanize, we\u2019re just trying to reflect that reality and express the absurdity.\u201d<\/p>\n

Newsom\u2019s defense of his defamation suit against Fox News and host Jesse Watters came a day after he scored a small legal victory in the case, as a Delaware judge ruled that his $787 million lawsuit can move forward.<\/p>\n

As we previously reported, Judge Sean P. Lugg found it \u201creasonably conceivable\u201d that Fox intentionally pushed false claims about Newsom when accusing him of lying about a phone call with Donald Trump during protests in Los Angeles.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe respectfully disagree with the court\u2019s decision and plan to vigorously defend against this frivolous lawsuit as it\u2019s nothing more than a blatant attempt to silence free speech and weaken the First Amendment,\u201d Fox News Media said in a statement to TheWrap on Thursday.<\/p>\n

Fox filed to dismiss the lawsuit last August, calling the governor\u2019s suit a political stunt.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf Fox News wants to lie to the American people on Donald Trump\u2019s behalf, it should face consequences \u2014 just like it did in the Dominion case,\u201d Newsom said after he first filed the suit last year<\/a>. \u201cI believe the American people should be able to trust the information they receive from a major news outlet. Until Fox is willing to be truthful, I will keep fighting against their propaganda machine.\u201d<\/p>\n
