\n\tDuring California Gov. Gavin Newsom<\/a>\u2019s last appearance on \u201cReal Time with Bill Maher\u201d<\/a> in 2025, the titular host took pains to grill his governor on what he felt were the many needless layers of bureaucracy in the Golden State \u2014 namely, that he was forced to pay for two roof inspections on his home following the wildfires that ravaged the Pacific Palisades and Altadena.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cWhy do I need two inspections, which I have to pay for?!\u201d exclaimed the comedian<\/a>. \u201cYou were here last time. We talked about regulations. You said, \u2018Oh, it\u2019s a completely new day\u2026 You said you were working on it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThat\u2019s about as testy as things got. Maher is a big fan of Newsom\u2019s overall, having repeatedly urged him to run for president in 2028 and cheering on his social media trolling of President Trump. Plus, they have the exact same hairstyle.<\/p>\n

\n\tOn Friday night, Newsom returned to the late-night HBO show to promote his memoir \u201cYoung Man in a Hurry: A Memoir of Discovery.\u201d Maher was a bit tougher on his pal than he\u2019s been in the past.<\/p>\n

\n\tMaher kicked off their sit-down chat by asking Newsom about how high the temperature\u2019s been raised in American politics given the recent assassination attempt<\/a> on President Trump at the White House Correspondents\u2019 Dinner.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cWhat did [Trump] do the day after [the assassination attempt]? He talked about the beach photo and the indictment of one of his enemies,\u201d Newsom replied, referencing Trump going after former FBI director James Comey over an innocuous photo of arranged seashells he posted. \u201cHe\u2019s not doing anything to try to unite this country in any way, shape, or form. To me, that\u2019s the biggest reflection of this moment \u2014 just the sewer we\u2019re now living in because of Donald Trump<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThen Maher dug his heels in: \u201cBut many people would say that you are imitating him\u2026 You are the one who kind of imitates his style with the trolling. You\u2019re suing Fox now, I understand.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cFox better look to settle right now or apologize for defamation,\u201d Newsom shot back.<\/p>\n

\u201cOK but that sounds exactly like what he does,\u201d offered Maher. \u201cSuing media?\u201d Trump since 2024 has forced big media companies, including Disney and Paramount, into rich settlements over frivolous lawsuits.<\/p>\n

\n\tNewsom was undeterred: \u201cWell, don\u2019t defame, don\u2019t lie,\u201d he said of his suit against Fox News<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat does sound like him,\u201d Maher reiterated.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"During California Gov.
