(NewsNation<\/a>) \u2014 New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani<\/a> would have asked King Charles III a particular question if the two had met privately during the monarch\u2019s trip to the U.S. this week.<\/p>\n

Hours before he met with Charles and Queen Camilla on Wednesday at a wreath-laying ceremony<\/a> at the National 9\/11 Memorial and Museum, Mamdani said if given the opportunity, he\u2019d call for the royal family to return a 105-carat diamond taken from India in the 1800s.<\/p>\n

\u201cI would probably encourage him to return the Koh-i-Noor diamond,\u201d Mamdani told reporters at an unrelated event.<\/p>\n

The Koh-i-Noor diamond, which means \u201cMountain of Light,\u201d is thought to have been mined in South India in the 13th century, according to NBC News<\/a>.<\/p>\n

There has been a longstanding debate on whether the diamond was \u201ctaken by the British, by force, from a frightened little boy,\u201d said author Anita Anand, referring to the 10-year-old son of the late Maharaja Ranjit Singh, or was gifted to the British following the annexation of Punjab in 1849, Gothamist reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Mamdani was born in Uganda<\/a> but is of Indian descent.<\/p>\n

During King Charles\u2019 coronation in 2023, the royal family opted out of using the diamond in the crown for Camilla\u2019s coronation, instead using Queen Mary\u2019s Crown and diamonds from Queen Elizabeth II\u2019s jewelry, the BBC reported<\/a> at the time.<\/p>\n
