Five years later, her former employer has suffered two major legal losses due to the way they treat children on their platforms.<\/p>\n<p>Her message to Meta, parent company of Facebook and Instagram: \u201cThe reality is you can run from consequences for a very long time, but you can\u2019t run forever.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In Los Angeles last month, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aol.com\/news\/meta-youtube-found-liable-woman-170624550.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:jury ordered Meta;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">jury ordered Meta<\/a> to pay a 20-year-old young woman who claimed Instagram harmed her mental health $4.2 million in compensatory damages.<\/p>\n<p>In New Mexico that same week, AG Raul Torrez ordered them to pay $375 million on behalf of children who interacted with predators on their platforms.<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"Frances Haugen, a former Meta employee, blew the whistle on what she considered unethical practices in 2021. Bloomberg via Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[People] look at how big these companies are, and it feels like it\u2019s impossible for any individual or any small group of people to do anything,\u201d Haugen told The Post in an interview. However, that has now been proven untrue. She says the rulings give her \u201ca lot of faith in humanity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The 42-year-old has worked for Google, Pinterest, and Yelp. She was recruited by Facebook as a product manager in 2019 then <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2023\/11\/14\/tech\/new-book-reveals-how-the-whistle-got-blown-on-facebook\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:came forward as a whistleblower;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">came forward as a whistleblower<\/a> in 2021 with the \u201cFacebook Files,\u201d revealing Meta acknowledged their platforms caused harms to young users in internal documents.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI came forward because I knew that I didn\u2019t really have a choice,\u201d she recalled. \u201cI had become complicit in a system that I was sincerely worried was going to harm millions of people around the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg testified personally in a landmark trial in Los Angeles. AP<\/p>\n<p>In the wake of these major rulings \u2014 both of which were considered bellwethers for whether or not similar legal theories would prevail \u2014 she anticipates that social media platforms will be far more proactive about preventing harm, particularly to minors.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think Meta has kind of taken the assumption that they don\u2019t have to act, and these court cases are the first repudiation that, no, there are costs of not acting too,\u201d Haugen, who lives in Puerto Rico, said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCompanies are going to have to sit down and assess: are we actually investing in a reasonable amount in responding to safety issues?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Haugen was <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/02\/18\/us-news\/zuckerberg-asked-about-screen-time-in-social-media-addiction-trial-at-la-court\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:fascinated by Zuckerberg\u2019s testimony;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">fascinated by Zuckerberg\u2019s testimony<\/a> at Los Angeles Superior Court.\u00a0\u201cWe don\u2019t very often get to see these kinds of unfiltered things because he mostly does these puff pieces or these very safe space interviews on podcasts,\u201d Haugen said.<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"Haugen says Zuckerberg\u2019s testimony was a testament to his own isolation. REUTERS<\/p>\n<p>The Meta CEO told a jury in February that beauty filters, which many say simulate plastic surgery, were \u201cfree expression\u201d and that keeping kids under the age of 13 off Instagram was \u201cvery difficult.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Many <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/02\/18\/us-news\/zuckerberg-asked-about-screen-time-in-social-media-addiction-trial-at-la-court\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:considered his comments dismissive;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">considered his comments dismissive<\/a>. This attitude, Haugen thinks, is evidence of Zuckerberg\u2019s strange professional career, which started when he launched Facebook aged just 19, in 2004.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think he\u2019s someone who didn\u2019t get to grow up. He was isolated all his 20s and 30s,\u201d Haugen said. \u201cIt really shows that he\u2019s been living in a bubble since he was 19 years old, more than half his life now, where the only opinion that actually mattered was his.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"Haugen testified about her own experience at Meta after stepping forward as a whistleblower. Ex-employee Haugen claims that for too long Zuckerberg has been surrounded by encouraging advisers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne of the things that dooms a lot of companies is favoritism,\u201d she argued. \u201cMark has not had to be around anyone he didn\u2019t want to be around for years.
