{"id":54875,"date":"2026-05-03T08:34:38","date_gmt":"2026-05-03T08:34:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/people\/54875\/"},"modified":"2026-05-03T08:34:38","modified_gmt":"2026-05-03T08:34:38","slug":"vance-says-pope-leo-should-stay-out-of-u-s-affairs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/people\/54875\/","title":{"rendered":"Vance Says Pope Leo Should Stay Out of U.S. Affairs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">Vice President JD Vance, the highest-ranking Catholic in the federal government, said in an interview on Fox News on Monday that the pope should stay out of American affairs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">Mr. Vance, a convert to Catholicism who is about to publish a book <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/03\/31\/us\/politics\/jd-vance-book-communion.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">detailing his turn to the faith<\/a>, brushed off a backlash among <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/04\/13\/us\/trump-pope-leo.html?smid=url-share\" title=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Christians across the political spectrum<\/a> to President Trump\u2019s attacks against Pope Leo XIV. He said \u201cthat in some cases it would be best for the Vatican to stick to matters of morality.\u201d Mr. Trump has clashed with the pontiff over matters of war and immigration, and on Sunday attacked him as \u201cweak on crime.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">\u201cStick to matters of, you know, what\u2019s going on in the Catholic Church,\u201d Mr. Vance said on Fox News\u2019s \u201cSpecial Report with Bret Baier\u201d when asked by Mr. Baier if he agreed with Mr. Trump\u2019s attacks against the pope. \u201cAnd let the president of the United States stick to dictating American public policy.\u201d He added: \u201cWhen they are in conflict, they are in conflict. I don\u2019t worry about it too much.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">He continued: \u201cI think it\u2019s a natural thing. I\u2019m sure it will happen in the future and it\u2019s not that big of a deal that it happened in the past.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">Mr. Vance <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/08\/25\/us\/jd-vance-catholic-church-conversion.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">converted to Catholicism<\/a> in 2019 at age 35, after private instruction with Dominican friars in Cincinnati. But his newfound faith has come with complications, as his views, particularly on immigration, have <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/04\/21\/world\/europe\/trump-pope-francis.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">prompted strong denunciations from leaders in the Vatican<\/a> and are in opposition to <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/05\/08\/us\/politics\/jd-vance-pope-leo-xiv.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the priorities set by Leo<\/a>, the first American pope.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">Senior leaders in the American Catholic Church have <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/11\/16\/us\/catholic-church-immigration-trump.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">also openly criticized<\/a> the Trump administration and <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/11\/12\/us\/bishops-trump-immigration.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">opposed the mass deportation of immigrants<\/a>. In one high-profile case, a Catholic group <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/02\/13\/us\/politics\/ice-detention-catholics-ash-wednesday.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">successfully sued for the right<\/a> to give communion to detained migrants, after they had been denied access for months.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">In a joint interview of three American cardinals on <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/video\/influential-us-cardinals-american-politics-60-minutes-video-2026-04-12\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">CBS\u2019s \u201c60 Minutes\u201d that aired on Sunday<\/a>, one, Robert McElroy, the archbishop of Washington, said that \u201cunder Catholic teaching,\u201d the U.S. war with Iran was \u201cnot a just war.\u201d Another, Blase Cupich, the archbishop of Chicago, said that the Trump administration\u2019s messaging, which has <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/03\/11\/arts\/television\/iran-war-trump-memes-social-media-videos.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">portrayed the conflict as gleeful entertainment<\/a>, was also \u201cdehumanizing the victims of war.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">The clash between Mr. Trump and the Vatican came just days after Mr. Vance and a team of American diplomats <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/04\/12\/us\/politics\/jd-vance-pakistan-iran-war-talks.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">failed to reach a peace deal<\/a> with Iran amid a cease-fire in the conflict. Leo is one of the world\u2019s most powerful critics of the U.S. war with Iran, and has sharply disagreed with suggestions from the Trump administration that <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/04\/03\/world\/middleeast\/pope-iran-war.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the war has divine sanction<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">In a recent <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/press.vatican.va\/content\/salastampa\/en\/bollettino\/pubblico\/2026\/04\/02\/260402a.html?utm_source=substack&amp;utm_medium=email\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">homily<\/a>, Leo said that the Christian mission had often been \u201cdistorted by a desire for domination, entirely foreign to the way of Jesus Christ.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">Mr. Vance, who has often <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/jd-vance-trashes-keir-starmer-emmanuel-macron-ukraine-peacekeeping-plan\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">viciously attacked critics<\/a> in much the same manner as Mr. Trump, offered a diplomatic tone as he spoke of Leo. \u201cI think it\u2019s a good thing, actually, that the pope is advocating for the things that he cares about,\u201d the vice president said, adding: \u201cWe\u2019re also going to disagree on substantive questions from time to time. I think that\u2019s a totally reasonable thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">The vice president\u2019s suggestion that Leo \u201cstick to matters of morality\u201d is also a notable distinction. Being a Roman Catholic requires acknowledgment of and adherence to the pope\u2019s authority over the church, but not his political views. President John F. Kennedy, defending his Catholic faith during his 1960 presidential campaign, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2005\/08\/07\/weekinreview\/revisiting-jfks-historic-1960-speech.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">said that he believed in an America<\/a> \u201cwhere no public official either requests or accepts instructions on public policy from the pope.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">The president\u2019s social media tirade against Pope Leo on Sunday night accused him of being too liberal, \u201cweak on crime,\u201d and \u201cterrible for foreign policy.\u201d He even falsely claimed credit for the pope\u2019s election.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">Leo, speaking on Monday at the start of a trip to Africa, told reporters he had \u201cno fear of the Trump administration.\u201d He added that he was not afraid of \u201cspeaking out loudly about the message of the Gospel, which is what I believe I am here to do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">Mr. Vance was also asked about the president\u2019s posting of an A.I.-generated image that depicted him as a Jesus-like figure; the vice president said that Mr. Trump \u201cwas posting a joke.\u201d The president, speaking at the White House, told reporters that he had deleted that post, and Mr. Vance said that was done because Mr. Trump \u201crecognized that a lot of people weren\u2019t understanding his humor in that case.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">Earlier, Mr. Trump, in an interview with CBS News, said that he had meant the post to portray him as a doctor.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">\u201cI viewed that as a picture of me being a doctor in fixing \u2014 you had the Red Cross right there, you had, you know, medical people surrounding me,\u201d Mr. Trump said in that interview. \u201cAnd I was like the doctor, you know, as a little fun playing the doctor and making people better. So that\u2019s what it was viewed as.
