Keir Starmer has urged the Labour Party to support him as expectations of a leadership challenge rise.<\/p>\n

Voters will head to the ballot box on Thursday for England\u2019s local elections, along with devolved elections in Scotland and Wales.<\/p>\n

Labour is set to lose nearly 2,000 council seats across England and cede control of Wales for the first time since devolution began almost 30 years ago, according to forecasts.<\/a><\/p>\n

Reports<\/a> suggest Greater Manchester mayor Andy Burnham is preparing to challenge Starmer\u2019s premiership by taking a safe seat in parliament, having been\u00a0previously blocked by Labour\u2019s executive body.<\/a><\/p>\n

Angela Rayner, former deputy prime minister, is also reportedly<\/a> readying herself to throw her hat into the ring.<\/p>\n

Health secretary Wes Streeting allegedly<\/a> has the backing of enough MPs to overthrow Starmer, too.<\/p>\n

Writing in The Observer, <\/a>the prime minister pointed to last week\u2019s terrorist attack in Golders Green and the \u201cfractured world\u201d overseas as proof that Labour needs to stand together.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have a choice,\u201cStarmer said. \u201cWe could sink into the politics of grievance and division. Or we could rise to this moment \u2013 together \u2013 in a national effort that matches the scale of the threats and turbulence we face.\u201d<\/p>\n

Referring to the three prime ministers the Conservatives had between 2019 and 2022, he wrote: \u201cWhen the nation rallied together to deal with Covid, the last government could have channelled that spirit to build a better nation.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut instead, they descended into political infighting and let the country slump back to the old status quo. Not this time.\u201d<\/p>\n

Despite the ongoing speculation around his longevity in No.10, Starmer insisted that his government will \u201creshape our nation\u201d, especially with the new parliamentary term starting up after the elections.<\/p>\n

He vowed to boost the UK\u2019s defence to \u201cmeet the threats of our age\u201d while also taking \u201cback control of our energy and our bills\u201d.<\/p>\n

Starmer also promised to boost \u201cour economy security\u201d by deepening the UK\u2019s economic relationship with the EU.<\/p>\n

He wrote: \u201cThe world is a tougher place than it has been for decades. We cannot be satisfied with prolonged flatlining, interrupted only by shocks and crises. That status quo is why the public are frustrated and lacking hope for the future.\u201d<\/p>\n

While Peter Mandelson was sacked in September over his links to convicted *** offender Jeffrey Epstein, the former Labour peer\u2019s appointment has continued to haunt the prime minister.<\/p>\n

As Mandelson was Starmer\u2019s pick to be the UK\u2019s ambassador to the US, the scandal has raised questions over the PM\u2019s judgement.<\/p>\n
