OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) \u2014 The annual Berkshire Hathaway shareholders meeting drew a smaller crowd this year<\/a> with a new CEO at the helm.<\/p>\n

The event usually brings in around 40,000 people. This year, with Warren Buffett no longer leading the company, shareholders noticed lighter attendance.<\/p>\n

Scott Schmidt and his wife have attended the shareholders event since 2007. <\/p>\n

\u201cSitting in the audience there today, we noticed that it was probably down, we guess, about a third of what it was last year,\u201d Schmidt said.<\/p>\n

Buffett\u2019s influence on attendance\"BerkshireBerkshire Hathaway Saturday(WOWT)<\/p>\n

Schmidt said Buffett\u2019s presence drew many attendees.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople came just to see him, and not so much because of Berkshire Hathaway,\u201d Schmidt said.<\/p>\n

Shareholder Bill Hughes has attended the meeting for more than a decade. He also noticed the drop in attendance.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe arena was packed the last two years,\u201d Hughes said. \u201cThis year, the upper level, especially around the sides and back, were kind of sparse.\u201d <\/p>\n

New CEO leads meeting<\/p>\n

CEO Greg Abel led the meeting, taking over a role that typically fell to Buffett.<\/p>\n

Schmidt said Abel did well in his new role.<\/p>\n

\u201cI thought he did a really good job and covered a breadth of things,\u201d Schmidt said.<\/p>\n

Hughes said Abel brought in the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad CEO and the NetJets CEO.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was nice hearing from them,\u201d Hughes said.<\/p>\n

Schmidt said the change in attendance did not diminish the experience.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s more of a transition than a complete change,\u201d Schmidt said.<\/p>\n

Official attendance numbers from the Berkshire Hathaway Shareholders event have not yet been released. <\/p>\n
