The incident occurred on the afternoon of Monday, May 4, Associated Press<\/a> reports.<\/p>\n Secret Service agents in plainclothes initially spotted the “imprint” of a weapon on the suspect, whose identity has not yet been released, at 3:30 p.m. local time. They then promptly contacted uniformed Secret Service, per AP.<\/p>\n The suspect was not on White House grounds, though the White House North Lawn was briefly evacuated during the shooting, NBC Washington<\/a> reports. The Secret Service is actively patrolling the area “24\/7, hard-core,” Secret Service Deputy Director Matt Quinn said, per the outlet.<\/p>\n When the Secret Service agents approached the suspect, he allegedly responded by firing at them, and the agents returned fire. A bystander was struck in the crossfire, and it is unclear whether they were shot by the Secret Service or by the suspect, per AP, which cited Quinn.<\/p>\n Quinn confirmed the shooter and the victim were transported to nearby hospitals, per the outlet.<\/p>\n \u201cWe’ll let the doctors figure that out,\u201d Quinn said regarding who shot the bystander, noting that \u201cinvestigators believe he was struck by the suspect.\u201d<\/p>\n When asked if the shooting could have been targeting President Donald Trump, Quinn told the outlet \u201cI’m not going to guess on that,” adding \u201cWhether or not it was directed to the president or not, I don’t know, but we will find out.\u201d<\/p>\n The shooting occurred shortly after Vice President JD Vance’s motorcade passed through the area, but Quinn said authorities do not the believe the incident is related.<\/p>\n Want to keep up with the latest crime coverage?
