{"id":59563,"date":"2026-05-06T14:57:17","date_gmt":"2026-05-06T14:57:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/people\/59563\/"},"modified":"2026-05-06T14:57:17","modified_gmt":"2026-05-06T14:57:17","slug":"why-nyc-keeps-getting-safer-despite-mamdani-and-albany","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/people\/59563\/","title":{"rendered":"Why NYC keeps getting safer despite Mamdani and Albany"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch \u2014 backed by the NYPD rank and file \u2014 deserves all the credit for New York City\u2019s continued crime drop.<\/p>\n<p>Every law-abiding New Yorker should applaud her for <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/05\/04\/us-news\/nyc-crime-plunges-to-historic-laws-as-nypd-boss-reveals-plan-to-keep-streets-safe-for-summer\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">achieving new lows in major crime<\/a> \u2014 with murders hitting an all-time low in April.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The city saw just 19 homicides last month, beating the record of 21 set in 2014 and 2017; year-to-date in 2026 it\u2019s just 76 murders, besting the prior low for the first four months of 86, set in 2018.<\/p>\n<p><img style=\"aspect-ratio:1.49926794;display:block\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-modal-image=\"39295444\" width=\"885\" height=\"590\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/people\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/nypd-commissioner-jessica-tisch-ceremony-126512058.jpg\" alt=\"NYPD commissioner Jessica Tisch.\" class=\"wp-image-39295444\"  \/>Every law-abiding New Yorker should applaud Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch for achieving new lows in major crime.\u00a0 Stefano Giovannini for NY Post<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\tMore From\t\t\t\t\t\t\tPost Editorial Board<\/p>\n<p>Shootings, robberies, grand larceny-auto, burglaries and felony assaults all dropped from April 2025, too, though much crime remains above the 2019 level, before the state\u2019s worst \u201ccriminal-justice reforms\u201d kicked in.<\/p>\n<p>The only credit Mayor Zohran Mamdani deserves is for leaving her in charge of the department, even as he keeps <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/04\/20\/opinion\/mamdani-still-plans-to-unravel-the-nypd-and-with-it-public-safety\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">making her job tougher<\/a> \u2014 starting with his first act as mayor, halting the hiring of 5,000 more cops.<\/p>\n<p>As it is, the added officers she managed to hire before he took over have been key to cutting major crime by 9.5% year-over-year.<\/p>\n<p>Also crucial: Her focus on a deliberate, data-driven \u201czone policing\u201d strategy that targets public-safety resources where they\u2019re most needed.<\/p>\n<p>And don\u2019t doubt that the city\u2019s most vulnerable benefit most: Crime in NYCHA projects is down 8.7%, while The Bronx is seeing record declines after lagging the citywide trend last year. <\/p>\n<p>All while the NYPD must work against the tide from Albany, as the Legislature has handcuffed law enforcement with \u201creforms\u201d that often keep even repeat offenders out of jail.<\/p>\n<p>The mayor\u2019s instincts on public safety <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/04\/23\/opinion\/mamdani-chi-osses-performances-this-week-prove-theyre-in-the-wrong-field\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">remain terrible<\/a>;
