ECB succession race heats up as speculation over Christine Lagarde\u2019s early exit boosts three leading central bankers.<\/p>\n
Recent reports suggest Christine Lagarde, president of the European Central Bank, could step down before the end of her eight-year mandate in October 2027. Timing remains uncertain; she may stay or she may leave to take the helm of the World Economic Forum before that time.<\/p>\n
Lagarde hasn\u2019t \u201cmade a decision,\u201d the ECB said in a written statement, but speculation about an early departure is being taken seriously because it would ensure French President Emanuel Macron\u2019s influence in choosing the central bank\u2019s future leadership.<\/p>\n
Macron will leave the Elysee Palace in 2027, and he could be replaced by a populist far right candidate. That eventuality would complicate the selection of the next ECB head. Should Lagarde leave her post early, Macron will still be in the driver\u2019s seat to defend France\u2019s preferences.<\/p>\n
Who Could Succeed Lagarde?<\/p>\n
Three current and former central bank leaders are already thought to be in the running to succeed Lagarde: Klaas Knot, former president of De Nederlandsche Bank (DNB); Pablo Hernandez de Cos, former governor of the Bank of Spain; and Joachim Nagel, president of Germany\u2019s Bundesbank.<\/p>\n
Nagel, 59, has the strongest credentials on paper. Already a member of the ECB Governing Council, he belongs to one of the four nations\u2014Germany, Italy, Spain, France\u2014that dominate the selection process. <\/p>\n
While he has the reputation of a hawk who emphasizes price stability and financial resilience, he has displayed flexibility by supporting the use of Eurobonds to finance EU joint defense spending. On the downside, Nagel\u2019s appointment would be seen as pushing Germany\u2019s advantage too far, given that a compatriot, Ursula Von Der Leyen, is chief of the European Commission.<\/p>\n
Knot, 58, another inflation hawk, was president of the DNB for 14 years. But the Netherlands is not one of the four biggest European countries that usually place their candidates in the top positions. Hernandez de Cos, 55, a dove, may have an edge. <\/p>\n
