AI systems that generate child pornography will also be banned.

The EU’s AI Act became law in August 2024 after years of talks. Under the phased rollout, rules governing high-risk uses were set to kick in this August.

Yet as only a couple of countries around the world followed the EU’s lead, the bloc faced criticism for cracking down on AI too early and failing to be a standard-setter on tech rules. That’s despite civil society saying the rules are needed to protect people from the potential harms of the emerging technology.

The Cypriot presidency of the Council of the European Union and the European Parliament confirmed the agreement following…

[124
7798,552,15577,1502,6156,202,233,249,2432,1069,36119,36120,4503,1430,2361,3675,584,17,403
0":"post-60556","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-friedrich-merz","8":"tag-algorithms","9":"tag-artificial-intelligence","10":"tag-big-data","11":"tag-companies","12":"tag-data-protection","13":"tag-elon-musk","14":"tag-friedrich-merz","15":"tag-germany","16":"tag-industry","17":"tag-intelligence","18":"tag-internet-governance","19":"tag-internet-search","20":"tag-medical-devices","21":"tag-meps","22":"tag-privacy","23":"tag-space","24":"tag-technology","25":"tag-united-states","26":"tag-ursula-von-der-leyen
["GET
