{"id":60917,"date":"2026-05-07T12:21:23","date_gmt":"2026-05-07T12:21:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/people\/60917\/"},"modified":"2026-05-07T12:21:23","modified_gmt":"2026-05-07T12:21:23","slug":"rubio-meets-with-pope-leo-xiv-days-after-latest-trump-attack","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/people\/60917\/","title":{"rendered":"Rubio meets with Pope Leo XIV days after latest Trump attack"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/05\/05\/us-news\/rubio-preps-for-frank-chat-with-pope-leo-xiv-amid-vatican-friction-with-trump\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Secretary of State Marco Rubio<\/a> kicked off a two-day visit to Vatican City and Italy Thursday by <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/05\/05\/opinion\/marco-rubio-has-a-chance-to-broker-peace-following-trump-and-pope-leos-nasty-clash\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">meeting Pope Leo XIV<\/a>, days after President Trump claimed the first American-born pontiff was \u201cendangering a lot of Catholics and a lot of people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/04\/18\/world-news\/pope-leo-has-no-interest-in-feud-with-president-trump-over-iran-war\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Leo has repeatedly criticized the Trump administration<\/a> over its hardline immigration policies and, more recently, over the war in Iran. The president has responded aggressively, attacking the Bishop of Rome last month as \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/04\/12\/us-news\/trump-blasts-pope-leo-after-pontiffs-veiled-jabs-over-iran-war-immigration\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">WEAK on Crime, and terrible for Foreign Policy.<\/a>\u201c<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe pope would rather talk about the fact that it\u2019s OK for Iran to have a nuclear weapon,\u201d Trump told conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt <a href=\"https:\/\/hughhewitt.com\/president-donald-trump-returns-to-the-hugh-hewitt-show\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">in an interview broadcast Monday<\/a>. \u201cAnd I don\u2019t think that\u2019s very good. VATICAN MEDIA\/AFP via Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>The pope and his allies have insisted he is merely conveying Biblical teachings with no ulterior political motive.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe mission of the church is to preach the Gospel, to preach peace. If someone wants to criticize me for announcing the Gospel, let him do it with the truth,\u201d Leo told reporters Tuesday, adding that the Catholic Church \u201cfor years has spoken out against all nuclear weapons, so there is no doubt there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The pope noted that the Catholic Church has always permitted countries to act in self-defense and acknowledged the church\u2019s \u201cjust war\u201d tradition.<\/p>\n<p>However, due to the advent of more powerful and destructive weapons, \u201cthe whole concept of war has to be reevaluated in terms today,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd I always believe that it\u2019s much better to enter into dialogue than to look for arms.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rubio himself told reporters at the White House on Tuesday that the Vatican stop had been planned for a while.
