Chief Justice John Roberts<\/a> decried personal attacks on himself and his fellow justices as the Supreme Court<\/a> faces backlash surrounding a recent gerrymandering decision.<\/p>\n

The comments came after the high court ruled 6-3 that race-based redistricting was unconstitutional, finding that Louisiana\u2019s <\/a>second black-majority congressional district was created in violation of the Constitution<\/a> and the scope of Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act in the landmark case Louisiana v. Callais<\/a>. The ruling has sparked renewed redistricting efforts across several Southern states, including South Carolina, Tennessee, and Alabama.<\/p>\n

Roberts, however, said during a judicial conference<\/a> on Wednesday that the high court stands above politics, without mentioning the recent ruling.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think [people] view us as purely political actors, which I don\u2019t think is an accurate understanding of what we do,\u201d Roberts said. \u201cCertainly, those aspects are open to debate, and people should talk about them, but we\u2019re not simply part of the political process, and there\u2019s a reason for that, and I\u2019m not sure people grasp that as much as is appropriate.\u201d<\/p>\n

Roberts said criticism of the courts becomes dangerous when it shifts from legal disagreement to personal attacks on judges.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think considered criticism is a very good thing,\u201d the chief justice said. \u201cYou hope it\u2019s intelligent criticism, but it doesn\u2019t have to be. It\u2019s a free country, and I certainly don\u2019t object to it, and I don\u2019t think my colleagues do either.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOn the other hand \u2026 there is a point where it changes from criticism of the opinion to criticism of the judge, and it can lead to some very serious problems,\u201d Roberts said. \u201cAs soon as you personalize, it can become problematic.\u201d<\/p>\n

Earlier this year, the court issued a decision that rolled back President Donald Trump\u2019s<\/a> tariff efforts.
After the decision, Trump took to social media, calling the court \u201cinept and embarrassing\u201d on\u00a0Truth Social and accusing the dissenting judges of \u201copenly disrespecting the presidents who appointed them.\u201d<\/p>\n
