Blowback over billionaire Jeff Bezos<\/a>\u2018s involvement in the Met Gala continues to grow amid accusations that he \u201cruined\u201d the annual fashionable f\u00eate.<\/p>\n

The Amazon founder and his wife, Lauren S\u00e1nchez Bezos<\/a>, reportedly bought their way to the so-called \u201cSuper Bowl of fashion\u201d by dropping a rumored $10 million<\/a> to become the main funders of the 2026 Met Gala<\/a> and attend the event as honorary chairs. <\/p>\n

\u201cIn 2026, there is no shortage of material to inspire rage against the Bezos family,\u201d Christina Cauterucci writes in a Slate essay<\/a> titled \u201cI Used to Love the Met Gala. Then the World\u2019s Most Evil Couple Ruined It for Everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n

The alleged sins of Bezos include complaints of poor working conditions among Amazon workers, \u201cshameless\u201d sucking up<\/a> to President Donald J. Trump, and \u201cruthless accumulation of billions\u201d of dollars as average citizens increasingly struggle to afford basic necessities.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs such,\u201d Cauterucci continues, \u201cin the lead-up to the party, there were whispers that some invitees would boycott the gala in protest.\u201d<\/p>\n

Before the gala, protesters left hundreds of plastic bottles filled with yellow liquid around the Metropolitan Museum of Art to call attention to the allegations that Amazon workers are forced to urinate in bottles.<\/p>\n

\u201cBoycott the Bezos Met Gala\u201d signs also filled the streets of New York City and were even projected onto buildings. <\/p>\n

On Monday, protesters gathered outside the museum<\/a> with signs calling for a boycott. <\/p>\n

For many online spectators, another notable shift that dimmed the night\u2019s glamour was the guest list, which they suspected was heavily influenced by Bezos\u2019s involvement.<\/p>\n

Many A-list celebrities were missing from the Metropolitan Museum of Art\u2019s famed steps, including 16-time Grammy winner Lady Gaga<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Actresses Zendaya and Meryl Streep<\/a> also skipped the event, citing busy schedules, while supermodel Bella Hadid liked a social media post calling for a boycott of the Bezos-backed Gala.<\/p>\n

Instead of these big fashion names, the carpet was walked by executives of technology companies like Snapchat, Instagram, and OpenAI.<\/p>\n

Tech billionaires Facebook co-founder Mark Zuckerberg and Google co-founder Sergey Brin also made their Met Gala debuts.<\/p>\n

A-listers were noticeably absent from the opening ceremony as well.<\/p>\n

The Met Gala usually starts with the evening\u2019s co-chairs arriving first and watching the opening number together.<\/p>\n

This year, the co-chairs were Anna Wintour, Nicole Kidman, Beyonc\u00e9, and Venus Williams\u2014but only two of the women, Wintour and Kidman, stood next to S\u00e1nchez on the carpet during the opening number. <\/p>\n

As pictures of S\u00e1nchez were shared online, her look\u2014consisting of a navy-blue custom Schiaparelli gown and dangling diamond earrings\u2014drew heavy criticism. <\/p>\n

Some commenters were in disbelief that the dress was from the French Haute Couture house known for its surreal, artistic designs, and instead guessed it was from the fast-fashion brand SheIn<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Online commentators, however, called S\u00e1nchez out for wearing the exact same silhouette she always wore\u2014 extremely tight, low-cut, and corseted\u2014and for choosing shiny, \u201ccheap-looking\u201d fabric rather than the crushed velvet worn by Cate Blanchett<\/a> in her interpretation of the famous portrait.<\/p>\n

Typically, the Met Gala is an opportunity for designers and A-listers to experiment with new styles, and this year\u2019s theme, \u201cFashion Is Art,\u201d called for creative outfits. Bezos did not walk the stairs with S\u00e1nchez, but joined her inside.<\/p>\n

The former American Vogue editor in chief told CNN<\/a> that S\u00e1nchez was a \u201cgreat lover of costume and obviously of fashion,\u201d adding, \u201cWe\u2019re very grateful for her incredible generosity, so we\u2019re thrilled she\u2019s part of the night.\u201d<\/p>\n

The criticism and calls for a boycott did not affect the financial end results of the annual charity event. <\/p>\n

This year, the tickets were $100,000 each. <\/p>\n

At Monday\u2019s press event, the museum\u2019s director, Max Hollein, shared<\/a> that the 2026 Gala broke fundraising records and was estimated to bring in $42 million for the Costume Institute. <\/p>\n
