Nearly $40 million of that came from an outside spending group aligned with House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., who was heavily involved in the effort to redraw the state\u2019s congressional map.<\/p>\n<p>The pro-redistricting campaign outspent the opposition 10 to 1 on television ads, according to analysis from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2026\/04\/16\/virginia-redistricting-election-finance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">The Washington Post.<\/a>\u00a0But the legal challenge that Republicans helped bankroll to get the map thrown out proved more decisive.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe funniest part about the court\u2019s ruling that Virginia\u2019s map is unconstitutional garbage is that the Democrats burned $64M just to get it thrown out,\u201d conservative columnist Dustin Grage wrote on social media.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDemocrats incinerated nearly $70 million on an unconstitutional gerrymandering scheme in Virginia,\u201d conservative commentator Steve Guest said following the court\u2019s ruling.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0Virginia Supreme Court ruled Friday\u00a0that Virginia Democrats violated the state constitution by fast-tracking the gerrymander referendum before voters, who narrowly approved the measure earlier this year.<\/p>\n<p>The Virginia Supreme Court\u2019s ruling striking down Democrats\u2019 costly redistricting push sparked an uproar on social media over the massive sum the party spent to pass the now-defunct congressional map.\u00a0 Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>The court\u2019s decision is a major setback for Democrats\u2019 efforts to flip control of the House of Representatives in November\u2019s midterm elections. Though the party made gains in California with a Democratic-friendly gerrymander, Republicans have carved out a significant lead in the country\u2019s redistricting race.<\/p>\n<p>The GOP has redrawn maps in\u00a0Texas, North Carolina, Missouri, Florida, and Tennessee that could carve out roughly 10 additional seats for the party in 2026.<\/p>\n<p>Republicans are also eyeing new maps in Louisiana and South Carolina, among other southern states, following the Supreme Court\u2019s decision to significantly curb the use of race in drawing electoral districts.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries ripped the court\u2019s ruling as an \u201cundemocratic action\u201d designed to disenfranchise voters. AP<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe try \u2018Zero F\u2014ing Wins\u2019 next time,\u201d Martinez added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI guess it\u2019s fitting that her initials are LLL,\u201d journalist Chuck Ross wrote, referring to Lucas.<\/p>\n<p>The FBI\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/top-spanberger-ally-targeted-fbi-corruption-probe-long-history-controversy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">raided Lucas\u2019 office<\/a>\u00a0on Wednesday in Portsmouth, Va., as part of an ongoing investigation.
